BMX , abbreviation for motocross or motocross bikes , is a sport of cycles performed on BMX bikes, whether in competitive BMX racing or BMX freestyle, or else in public recreation outside or outside the road. BMX began in the early 1970s in the United States when children began spurring their bikes on a dirt track in southern California, inspired by motocross stars at the time. The shift to freestyle from racing came in 1985 with a popular style moving from chrome frames and contrasting components in blue or red black to the norm, for brightly colored bikes in one color only, including wheel wheels and even matching tires. Since BMX exploded into the streets of England so suddenly, it was probably inevitable that it would explode at the same pace, as the kids who rode the bikes left school and went to work. George E. Esser founded the National Bicycle League as a non-profit bike motocross watchdog organization in 1974. Before they founded NBL, Esser and his wife, Mary, approved a motorcycle race with the American Motocross Association (AMA). Two of their sons, Greg and Brian, ride motorcycles, but also enjoy riding and racing BMX with their friends. It was their children's interest, and the lack of BMX organizations in the East, which encouraged Esser to start NBL in Florida.
In 1977, the American Bicycle Association (ABA) was organized as a national sanctioning body for emerging sports. In April 1981, the International BMX Federation was founded, and the first world championship was held in 1982. Since January 1993, BMX has been integrated into Union Cycliste Internationale.
Freestyle BMX is now one of the most important events at the annual Summer X Games Extreme Sports and Ethnies Backyard Jam, held mainly on the East and West coasts of the United States. The popularity of the sport has increased as it is relatively easy and the availability of places to ride and do the trick.
In 2003, the International Olympic Committee made BMX a full Olympic sports medal for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, and M? Ris? Tromberg (male, for Latvia) and Anne-Caroline Chausson (women, for France) became the first Olympic Champion.
