Tuxedo Mask ( ??????? , Do not do Kamen >) , also known as MamoruÃ, Chiba ( ??? , Chiba Mamoru , renamed "Darien Shields" in some English adaptations) , is a fictitious character and one of the main protagonists of Sailor Moon's media franchise made by Naoko Takeuchi. He is disguised to support the central hero of the series, Sailor Army. Wearing a mask to conceal his identity, he interferes with enemy operations, offers Sailor Soldiers advice, and sometimes physically helps them in battle.
Like the Sailors' Army, the Tuxedo Mask has a power item: Sailor Crystal, which gives him guardianship over the planet Earth. He also has inner strength, including psychometry and healing, which evolved and became important to the storyline in the manga, but which only played a small role and remained static in the anime. Along with his main love interest, Sailor Moon, an important player in many stories, he has a royal credential in the story line "past lives" and also in the future.

Mamoru Chiba first appeared as a high school student studying at Moto-Azabu High School. Before the start of the series, his parents died in a car accident on his sixth birthday, which reveals the memories of his previous life as Prince Endymion. Living alone, Mamoru befriends Usagi Tsukino school students. At the beginning of the series, Princess Serenity's dream haunts Mamoru. Unaware of his double identity as Tuxedo Mask, he suffers from painful vision every time Usagi becomes threatened, and he changes unconsciously into a Tuxedo Mask. As Mamoru, he tries to collect his strange dreams, and as a Tuxedo Mask, he tries to remember his past and his identity, while searching for Princess Serenity. He searched for the Legendary Silver Crystals with the belief that this would completely restore his earlier memories. In the anime adaptation, he searched for it because Princess Serenity tells him to dream. Of all the characters, Mamoru was brainwashed and captured most throughout the series.
Mamoru and Usagi share romantic feelings well before they discover their identity. Once they become a couple, they remain very faithful to each other and their love endures from many trials. In the manga they briefly show jealousy to each other. Usagi always call him "Mamo-chan" ( ????? ) throughout the series during this time period (Chibiusa also calls him by this nickname later ). After dating for two years, Mamoru gave Usagi an engagement ring at the airport. Six years later, Mamoru and Usagi married. In the future, they become kings and queens and have a child together they named "Little Woman", known in most series as "Chibiusa".
Mamoru wrestled with his identity and function throughout the series, worried about his true nature, and then whether he was blocking Sailor's soldiers. Quite a lot of subtle characterization was made for Mamoru, and later expanded her role in a manga like who she was. He was also given psychometric powers, which also appeared in the anime, but was not given a name. It manifests in its ability to see and read dreams (like Chibiusa), to heal people and to monitor the status of the Earth. It does not fully develop until the Black Moon arc, and is used occasionally throughout the series.
In the original anime adaptation, Mamoru is the one who generally comes out, though somewhat spicy, and appears as a student. He showed interest in various subjects and emerged as smart. Musical Kakyu Ouhi Kourin showed that he aspired to become a doctor. He also "dates" Rei Hino for a short time before the revelation of all the past-life identities, though he believes they are just friends. This history evokes jealousy in Usagi in later seasons. Sailor Moon Crystal , the second anime adaptation, follows the manga continuity and thus has Mamoru as a high school student, without much interaction with Rei. Unlike the original anime, Mamoru and Usagi started hanging out relatively quickly rather than having to warm each other.
Most of Sailor Moon's transformations and final victories happen because he and the Tuxedo Mask work together. In the final battle against the Dark Kingdom, Queen Metaria absorbs Sailor Moon and Tuxedo's Mask into her body. However, they managed to combine their power through the Silver Crystal and destroy the Metalia Queen from within. The Tuxedo Mask also combines its power to the last Super Sailor Moon item with the rest of the soldiers using the Golden Crystal. In the Infinity story, she combines her power with Sailor Moon to create the next power stick. The episode in which this happened was The Rod of Love was born: a new transformation Usagi. This manga tends to show Mamoru as quiet, diligent, mysterious, and steadfast. His high school student body often admired him for this quality. The anime adaptation also tends to make it appear in every episode to save Sailor Moon's life. His attacks on anime are similar to those featured in the manga, but are not mentioned by name.
In music adaptation, Mamoru protects Usagi and generally appears at his side. However, some of his relationships change in different settings: for example, one of the musical expresses Queen Beryl as Mamoru's fiance of his time as Prince of the Earth. Affiliated with the Silver Millennium is against the laws of Earth, and Endymion violates this law when he falls in love with Princess Serenity. In this version of events, Serenity and Endymion are criminals (similar to Romeo and Juliet) who drove the innocent woman, Beryl, to crime by making her jealous. Sailor Pluto also revealed that he fell in love with Endymion, though he was satisfied with watching from afar.
Other variations occurred in the musical Ryuusei Densetsu , when Galaxia did not kill Mamoru, making him able to fight with the Sailor soldiers. Mamoru is usually heavily involved in the Battle of the Seafarer's Army, fighting with them as opposed to anime throwing hats and then letting Sailor Moon give a final blow.
Tuxedo Mask always gets his own song; these songs vary from musical to musical. One music featured several songs because Mamoru now appears as the Tuxedo Mask and then King Endymion appears disguised as Space Knight to look for Chibiusa.
In the live-action series, Mamoru is a quieter, yet more dedicated person. For example, he remained loyal to his girlfriend, Hina, though not loving him, on the basis of the promise they made as children. He's looking for Silver Crystal because of his amnesia: dreams tell him that the magical thing can restore his memory. To do this, he wears a masked Tuxedo mask and becomes a thief, looking for Silver Crystal. As soon as he regains his memory of his past and present life, he assumes his Endymion form to help the Sailor Guards and try his best to protect Usagi from the danger of using Excess Crystal Silver. However, because of his dedication he must join the Dark Kingdom or the Four King of Heaven to be killed. He also joins to keep an appointment with Usagi that they will not destroy the planet. Learning that Silver Crystal makes Metaria stronger every time Sailor Moon uses it, Endymion takes Metaria into her body before giving in to her dark powers. Now his evil parody, Dark Prince Endymion, he almost killed Sailor Mercury when Sailor Moon was forced to kill him to stop Metaria, causing Sailor Moon to commit suicide but they survive. But they are saved. Mamo's pocket watch stopped the sword from Sailor Moon. His knights from his past life'ems rescued him even though the knights were killed. She lives again after Sailor Moon manages to control Crystal's power and destroy Metaria forever.

As characters with different incarnations, special powers, transformations, and long lifetimes that include the Millennium of Perak and the 30th century, Mamoru gained many aspects and aliases as the series progresses.
Tuxedo Mask
"Tuxedo Mask" represents the disguised Mamoru made for himself to hunt Silver Crystals
Anime shows him standing on a pole, opposing gravity, and acting as a "dip" type. He looks less developed, and has no special powers or named attacks, but remains a constant force in helping Sailor Soldiers throughout the series when they are in trouble. At first he can not control the transformation and his body automatically (and painfully) changes if Sailor Moon is in danger. At the end of the first story, he can voluntarily activate the transformation; in a henshin-style sequence, this is indicated by drawing a rose from his pocket which then changes color, and the tuxedo and mask flies in. Later in the series he was shown to change instantly.
In the manga he started out as an ordinary thief who tried to find Crystal Silver. Luna initially told Usagi not to believe it, but succumbed when they began to fall in love and her true identity came up. Its functionality exceeds that of the savior often featured in the anime - often Sailor Moon goes to save her, and she lends her strength, support, and guidance to use Silver Crystal to defeat the enemy in return.
In the fourth story arc of the Helios manga reinforce the role of Tuxedo Mask as a hero by revealing that he, as the Prince of the Golden Kingdom, Elysion, has a sacred stone in the same way as the Princess of the Silver Millennium has a Silver Crystal. This sacred stone is the Golden Crystal, Sailor Crystal of the Earth.
Prince Endymion
Prince Endymion ( ???????????? , Purinsu Endimion ) is the crowning Prince of the planet Earth during the age of Millennium Silver, and Mamoru's identity in his previous life. He lives in the Golden Kingdom, which protects the Earth from within. Although he and the Elysion guard, Helios, never met each other personally during that time, they shared a shared desire to protect the planet. Endymion also has four guards, the Four Heavenly Kings, who protect him. She and Princess Serenity fall in love, and disobey the rules that forbid people from Earth and people from the moon to contact each other. In the manga, Beryl kills Endymion in the past. However, in the anime, Queen Metaria killed Prince Endymion in the past. He was reincarnated in the 20th century as Mamoru Chiba.
Manga often portrays Prince Endymion as a silent protagonist; his past life remains a mystery. Mamoru usually does not turn into Prince Endymion intentionally, but is usually used as a power-up of his Tuxedo Mask form. He was brainwashed by the Queen of Metarians of the Dark Kingdom during part of the "Dark Kingdom" arc, and referred to as " Endou ." Endou should be a friend of Motoki Furuhata/Motoki. Motoki brainwashed to trust dark Mamoru is his friend, Endou. During his time serving the Dark Kingdom, Mamoru appears as a demonic form of Endymion. In the anime, Mamoru can turn into Prince Endymion. Often this happens when Sailor Moon turns into Princess Serenity. As in the manga, he wears a black armor.
In the live-action series, Endymion wore white, and after getting this form, it became Mamoru's main battle form. He gains the power of teleportation, the power possessed by the Four Heavenly Kings. After he took Metaria to his body, his armor and accessories turned black and he became known as Metaria Endymion. He also gets a shrouded and black version of an accessory worn by Kings. The remains of white armor can be seen underneath.
King Endymion
Later in the series Mamoru appears as King Endymion, Tokyo's King of the Crystal of the 30th century. She is the husband of Neo-Queen Serenity, and father of Chibiusa. As the king of the Tokyo Crystal her royal outfit is a white tuxedo and lavender, as well as royal staff. King Endymion's first appearance was at the end of the manga and Crystal Act 18. He was not actually in physical form but a spiritual entity that guarded Crystal Palace while his original body slept. During this time he helped to guide the Sailor Warriors and his past self against the Dark Lord of the Moon. It was later revealed to the Sailor warriors that Mamoru never aged because of the power of Silver Crystal. This is the ghost of King Endymion who instructed the Tuxedo Mask in the first use of his attack "Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber." Prince Endymion became King at the end of the battle with Dead Moon Circus when Helios, pastor of his former home, Elysion, gave him his sacred golden crystals on the scepter. After this, both Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon transform into themselves each future, all Sailor Soldiers transform into their daughter's form. However, after this point, Mamoru is not visible in this form anymore.
This anime shows King Endymion only in the future as the father of the Little Woman and the King of Tokyo. He also appeared as a computer image when they first met him. However, he never proved to be fighting in battle. Diana made a comment on the future of the King and the Queen. He said at SuperS that the King and Queen love to pretend to be released from attending important banquets and gatherings. In native English, he is not referred to as Endymion; only "King of the Earth" or "King" or "King Darien".
Moonlight Knight
Moonlight Knight ( Tsukikage no Naito ) appears in the anime only for the first half Sailor Moon R , bow "Hell Tree". When Usagi wants to be the normal girl at the end of the first series, all the memories are hidden magically, including Mamoru's. However, Mamoru unknowingly still wants to protect Usagi, so her memory is separated from her and concentrates on the Moonlight Knight. After Mamoru recovered his memory, Moonlight Knight disappeared and rejoined Mamoru. Mamoru returned to Tuxedo Mask once again after that. Moonlight Knight mainly wears Arab robes and carries sabers. He also throws a white rose instead of the Tuxedo Mask red roses.
Strengths and custom items
Even in a civilian form, Mamoru showed various inner strengths in each series. Both in anime and manga he uses psychometry to read past, present, and future events through touch, and heal other people's wounds through psychokinesis. Inconsistent, he is shown teleporting; only once in the anime while under the rule of Queen Beryl, and several times as Prince Endymion in the live-action series.
Mamoru also shows a spiritual connection with Usagi: she can detect when she has turned into Sailor Moon. Originally in the anime series, before they became friends, this connection forcibly converted Mamoru into a Tuxedo Mask so he could protect it. In subsequent episodes, he seems to have control over his transformation, though he still appears soon after the start of most of the battles, no matter how far away from the developing situation.
On one occasion the anime gave the Tuxedo Mask a series of stylish transformations, with tuxedos and accessories formed around him as he hooked roses. He did not shout a special phrase, even though his voice actor joked with the advertise line "Tuxedo Power! Make up!" He also gained a transformation in the live-action series, using the same phrase, which is part of an embarrassing story he told Usagi about how he became the Tuxedo Mask. This transformation begins with a special band-aid, and the sequence consists of Mamoru pulling on his pants and coat with a dramatic flair.
Once transformed, the Tuxedo Mask displays additional power. In the anime shows this as primarily physical, while the manga describes them as rare and magical. Its flagship icon in the anime involves the use of roses, thrown like arrows to injure or distract enemies. He can also twist them or throw diverse to block attacks, or can throw a lot at once to bring down enemies. He seems to have an unlimited supply of these roses, which are supernaturally powerful and inculcate themselves in most materials, including concrete. In addition, when Mamoru takes on various shapes or aspects, the color changes. Tuxedo's red masked rose, the evil Prince Endymion is black (and electrified), and the White Moon Knight is white.
Tuxedo Mask's secondary weapon, his wand, often serves as a sword, and he can extend the length, either to attack or save people. As Prince Endymion and Moonlight Knight, he uses the original sword with a different style.
In the manga, Tuxedo mask can release energy from his hands, crying "Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber!" She also has a combination attack with her daughter, Sailor Chibi Moon: "Pink Sugar Tuxedo Attack." Development
Takeuchi designed the Tuxedo Mask character as his own ideals, describing it as "strong, silent, immovable, a bit like Captain Harlock." He initially intended his persona as the Tuxedo Mask to "have more mystery and take on a bigger role."
The name "Mamoru Chiba" begins as the prototype name for Makoto Kino. Kanji in the Mamoru clan is translated as "earth" (? , chi ) and "place " (? , ba ) . Together, they form the term "local," with a pun on its identity as Endymion, the Prince of the Earth. The given name means "protect" (? , mamoru ) .
Initially Naoko Takeuchi used the codename "Mysterious 2098 Face" for Tuxedo Mask. He then expressed his own confusion for the idea. Although Takeuchi has designed his own costume, he finds it hard to draw, because it has many parts to it; he often forgot to draw his part in the early manga. He then had the same problem with the Sailor Galaxia costume.
T? Ru Furuya states in "addition" that he has an influence on the development of the anime personality of Topeng Tuxedo. When asked about the differences between anime and manga, he announced "I'm driving." Therefore, the Tuxedo Mask is becoming more funny.
The name Endymion is perfect as a reference to Greek mythology. Endymion Greece fell in love with Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon.
Actor
Mamoru Chiba was originally voiced by T? Ru Furuya in the first Japanese anime series and related media. Furuya described the role as "very special to me." Mamoru is voiced by Kenji Nojima at Sailor Moon Crystal and all the media since. In the adaptation of DIC and Cloverway English, his name was changed to Darien Chiba and his voice was first provided by Rino Romano for the first eleven episodes, Toby Proctor for the next fifty-five episodes, and Vince Corazza for the rest of the series and his films. In Viz Media English, Mamoru's voice dub is supplied by Robbie Daymond.
In the musical stage, eight different actors and actresses have played Mamoru: Mizuki Sano, YÃ… z Mochizuki, Yuuta Enomoto, Kousei Amano, Edo Hidemasa, Kenji Urai, Yuu Shirota, Gyo Miyamoto and Y? Ga Yamato. Creator Naoko Takeuchi has described Sano's description of Mamoru as "sweet and sweet boy." Yuuta Mochizuki, the longest player among the musical actors, went on to appear as King Endymion during the musical Fumina Hara.
In the live action series, Mamoru is described by Jouji Shibue.
Reception and influence
[Sailor Moon's official Sailor Moon poll says Mamoru Chiba, Tuxedo Mask, and Endymion as separate entities. In 1992, the reader placed the Tuxedo Mask as the twelfth most popular character, Prince Endymion as the fifteenth most popular figure, and Mamoru Chiba as the sixteenth most popular of the thirty-eight choices. One year later, now with fifty choices, King Endymion became the eighteenth most popular figure, while Tuxedo Mask and Mamoru came in twenty and twenty-one each. Moonlight Knight, being the only anime form, was never included in the manga poll. Tuxedo Mask was the fourth favorite male character in an Animage poll in May 1993, and Mamoru was seventh the following year.
Although Takeuchi himself had a weak spot for Mamoru, he said that friends complained to him about Usagi falling in love with "useless men." He has been described as a "handsome hero" and a "boy in distress" by Jonathan Clements and Helen McCarthy. He has even been called "accountability" and "burden," his relationship with Usagi described as a mother-daughter relationship rather than a couple from the kingdom. Usagi is said to show him amae , or "indulgent love." When compared to male serial leads targeted at men, Mamoru, though not afraid of girls, seems uncomfortable with them. He also gives the impression of "characters who never laugh or have fun": "noble, passive and effective is totally ineffective."
The image of cap and cape also influences the early making of "Tuxedo Umino Mask" in the anime. The dub is called this character as Tuxedo Melvin. In this particular episode, Umino tries to impress Naru by dressing up like a Tuxedo Mask. This image is also used later in the manga for Tubby Mask for Chibiusa Picture Diary, Story of the Hammer Price Shrine. The character is based on Makoto Hanmatsuura who bid two million yen in a charity auction for the Kobe earthquake disaster that will be incorporated into the manga Sailor Moon .
