Improvisation of dance is the process of creating spontaneous movements. The development of improvisational movement materials is facilitated through creative explorations including mapping the body through levels, forms and dynamic schemes.

Improvisation is a free, seemingly unstructured, lack of rigorous and impulsive technique that draws inspiration from the practice and influence of everyday dance. It is a movement technique capable of generating dramatic content and thought, as well as more codified western dance techniques such as ballet forms and non-western movements.

Improvisation of dance is not just about creating a new movement but is also defined as freeing the body from a pattern of habitual movement (see Postmodern dance and Judson Dance Theater). Dancers and singer Michael Jackson combine improvisation in both definitions, insisting that he is interested in dancing to Billie Jean only if he can do it in a new way every time.

Much improvisation is focused on finding a deeper way to understand the hidden person's thoughts or feelings. Through instinctual emphasis, unexpectedly, an improvised free movement focused on the mover is able to explore authentic feelings and inspirations.

Tango Argentina

Tango Argentina, is a dance form that although choreography obviously depends on improvisation. Improved taught and improvised improvisation techniques are required to achieve high levels of competence in the dance and performance environment. People who gather closely, diverse rhythmic patterns in music, switch partners to every dance, and great vocabulary movements encourage improvised dance in Tango Argentina.

Belly Dance

Belly dancing is one of the most frequently danced forms of dance, since the frequent live music does not support the structured choreography. Professional stomach dancers can dance openly 6 nights a week, up to three times a night, and do not have time for choreography for 15-60 minutes a night in need of such a show. Even dancers with substantial choreographic repertoire often choose to improvise during musical performances as they cherish the energy exchange between dancers, musicians, and viewers, which increases by working "at the time". The American Tribal Tribal Tribal Dance is built entirely on group improvisation, though the group will usually plan and train their individual combinations and cues in advance.

Blues

Blues dance is generally performed for blues music, and highly improvised. Like lindy hop, the emphasis is on lead and following connections, but the emphasis is even greater. Blues dance is a paired and structured form of interpretive dance, and relies heavily on the leader who interprets the music of how he will do it; at the same time, his followers usually have the freedom to interpret music and add their own style as well.

Break Dance

B-boying features a highly improvised style based on cyclic motion patterns. Many b-boying styles exist, and dance crew will often feature choreography for certain songs. The individual appearance is more often improvised because of the nature of the dance.

Lindy Hop

Lindy Hop is generally an eight-count swing dance, developed mostly by Frankie Manning, and includes a large amount of improvisation. Once a dancer has learned various swing dance moves, from the West Coast Swing to Charleston to Balboa, the dancer will often combine all the moves he knows about these dance styles, and also add his own dance. dance style, or create a new dance movement or antenna. Because of its improvisational nature, lindy hop relies heavily on lead and following connections, rather than each partner knows the steps and does it together.

Playback and Post-Modern Contact Improvement

In the 1970s, Judson Church dancers and choreographer, Steve Paxton, in collaboration with other post-modern dancers, developed Contact Improvisation. "Improved contact" is an uncodified somatic technique, which serves as a framework for collective improvisation. This involves several dancers, usually two, who explore the motions together by supporting each other's weight, maintaining contact with each other, and bringing their attention to the point or points of contact between them. Unlike the classic pas de deux ballet, in which male pairs lift and support women, contact improvisation does not assign a differential role to each dancer. There is no officially codified or standardized movement, but partners generally lift, carry, fall up or down, stroking, and leaning against each other.

Contact improvisation is sometimes used by post-modern choreographers to produce or develop choreography.
