The polo shirt, also known as the golf dress and tennis suit , is a collar-shirt, pocket skirt with usually two or three buttons, and a pocket optional.

These three terms can be used interchangeably. Polo shirts are usually made of knitted fabrics (not of woven fabrics), usually piquale or less common cotton, interlock cotton, silk, merino wool, or synthetic fibers. The long dress version of the shirt is called polo dress .

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, tennis players typically wore "white tennis" consisting of long-sleeved white button-up shirts (worn with rolled sleeves), flannel pants, and ties. This outfit presents a problem for easy play and comfort.

The Lacoste design reduces the problems created by traditional tennis clothing:

In 1933, after retiring from professional tennis, Lacoste teamed up with Andrà © à © Gillier, a friend who was a clothing merchant, to market the shirts in Europe and North America. Together, they formed the Chemise company Lacoste, and began selling their shirts, which included a small embroidered crocodile logo on the left chest.

Before the duration of Lacoste in 1933 marketing his tennis shirt, the polo player wore a thick, long-sleeved shirt made of Oxford cotton. In 1920, Lewis Lacey, a Canadian born to British parents in Montreal, Quebec, in 1887, a male player and polo player, began producing embroidered t-shirts with polo stickers, designs from the Hurlingham Polo Club near Buenos Ice water. The term , which previously refers only to a long-sleeved shirt, the bottom button traditionally used in polo, soon became a universal moniker for a tennis shirt; in the 1950s, it was commonly used in the US to describe shirts that were most often considered part of formal tennis attire. Indeed, tennis players often refer to their shirts as polo shirts, despite the fact that their sport has been using it before the polo.

In 1972, Ralph Lauren incorporated his "polo shirt" as a prominent part of his original Polo line, thus helping further his widespread popularity. Although not specifically designed for use by polo players, Lauren's shirt mimics what at that time has become a normal outfit for polo players. Because he wanted to radiate certain "WASPishness" in his clothes, which initially adopted clothing styles such as Brooks Brothers, J. Golf

During the second half of the 20th century, when standard clothing in golf became more casual, the tennis shirt was adopted almost universally as a standard golf outfit. Many golf courses and country clubs require players to wear golf shirts as part of their dress code. In addition, producing Lacoste's "tennis shirts" in a variety of golf cuts has resulted in a special design of tennis shirts for golf, producing a golf golf outfit. Golf shirts are generally made of polyester, cotton-polyester mix, or merserated cotton. The racket usually holds three or four buttons, and consequently extends lower than the typical polo neck. Collars are usually made using double-layer stitched from the same fabric used to make t-shirts, in contrast to the polo shirt collar, which is usually a one-ply striped cotton. Golf shirts often have a pocket on the left side, to hold a scorepad and a pencil, and may not have a logo there.
