The Volkswagen Touareg (German pronunciation: ['tu: a? K] ) is a medium size luxury crossover SUV that produced by the German car manufacturer Volkswagen since 2002 at Volkswagen Bratislava Plant. The vehicle was named after the nomad Tuareg, a resident of the interior of the Sahara in North Africa.

Development
The Touareg (internal designated Typ 7L ) is a joint venture project developed by Volkswagen Group, Audi and Porsche. The goal is to create off-road vehicles that can handle such a sports car. The team, with more than 300 people, is headed by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert and based in Weissach, Germany. The result of the joint project is the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform, which is shared by Touareg, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, despite the styling, equipment, and technical differences between the vehicles. The Touareg and Porsche both sit five, while the stretched Q7 wheelbase accommodates the third row for seven passengers. Volkswagen Touareg was built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, in addition to the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne.
Due to demand, and the euro exchange rate against the US dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the United States, the V6 and V8 engine variants are mostly Touareg's Volkswagen offer. Compared to other Volkswagen-branded vehicles sold in the US aimed at the mass market, Touaregs comes in a more luxurious trim and is placed in competition with other luxury crossover SUVs from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. However, a number of diesel engines of the TDI V10 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) are available in the 2004 model year (before being withdrawn for environmental reasons). They were brought back to the United States for 2006 as "Tier I emissions concept (43 state emissions)". [3]

First generation (2002-2010)
Touareg comes as standard with four wheel drive system. It has automatic locking of the differential center progressively (with manual override), and a "low range" setting that can be enabled with controls in the cab. Options for making more off-road vehicles include the 4-wheel Adaptive Air Suspension available (plus Continuous Damping Control) that can raise the steering wheel at command, and the interior switch allows the rear differential to be manually locked. Ground clearance of its load level is at 6.3 'at (160 mm), Off Road Level is 9.6 in (244 mm), and Xtra clearance is 11.8 at (300 mm).
Marketing

Some of the First Generation Touaregs 2007 were given to the staff, players and crew of King Kong. Volkswagen then offered for sale a special edition of Touareg Kong, which featured enhanced specifications and King Kong badging on the B-pillar. W12 (2005-2010)
The dual 6-liter overhead camshaft (DOHC), a 48-valve W12 engine version originally intended to be a limited-edition model, with only 500 units planned to be produced; about 330 are scheduled to be sold in Saudi Arabia, with the remainder sold in Europe. Some of them W12 Touaregs are sold in China, but the amount sold is unknown. No sales in the United States. Finally, the W12 model becomes a regular model without production restrictions. Expected to reach 100 kilometers per hour (62.1 mph) in 5.9 seconds.
V10 TDI (2002-2010)
The V10 TDI was offered in the United States for a limited time in 2004, but emissions regulations forced it out of the market for a temporary period.
V10 TDI returned to the US market as a model vehicle in 2006 in five states. Later the US model went on sale in 2006, which corresponds to 50 state emissions with ultra-low sulfur diesel and particulate filters. California Air Resources Strikter Standards (CARB) caused the V10 TDI to be canceled again in the United States. The V10 engine has been replaced by a TDI V6 engine that meets CARB's minimum emission requirements for the 2009 model year. However, by 2015 it was found that this V6 engine does not meet CARB emissions requirements and is part of the Volkswagen emissions scandal.
Fifth Gear uses this version for testing to attract Boeing 747.
Facelift (2007-2010)
Touareg's first facelift was unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show, and then at the 2007 New York Auto Show as a 2008 model. It now features a grille shield from others in various Volkswagen Passenger Cars. The updated Touareg has over 2300 redesigned sections and offers several new tech features:
- ABS Plus, which works together with the traction control system, and shortens the braking distance by up to 25% on a loose surface;
- Front Scanning, adaptive shipping control system, which can slow or even stop the car depending on traffic conditions;
- Side Scan, blind-spot monitor: uses radar on the back of the car to sense the presence of another car, and causes a light-emitting diode (LED) mounted in the rearview mirror to flash. If the driver shows to move, the LED blinks at an accelerated level to alert the driver until another vehicle moves out of the Touareg vision field.
Touareg 2007, in addition to the long list of options, can be equipped with a package of driving dynamics, rollover sensors, 620 watt Dynaudio sound system, and redesigned comfortable chairs. All diesel versions now have standard diesel particle filters.
In the US and Canada, the Touareg facelifted is marketed as Touareg 2 for the 2008-2010 model year, returning to just Touareg in 2011.

The Touareg R50 is the third Volkswagen after Golf and Passat is given the 'R' treatment by Volkswagen Individual GmbH. The global launch of the R50 is at the Australian International Motor Show 2007.

It is estimated that this tank needs to be replenished every 6,000-10,000 miles (9,700-16,100 km). Touareg excludes NOX storage catalysts found in Jetta Clean Diesel TDI because of its heavy weight.
Touareg BlueTDI was launched at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. The production version of the V6 TDI Clean Diesel was launched at the 2008 LA Auto Show.
Although sales of production versions were planned in North America in 2008, it did not start until 2009.
