Toyota Hilux Bruiser (2017) review by CAR Magazine
src: car-images.bauersecure.com

Toyota Hilux (also renamed as HiLux and historically as Hi-Lux ) is a series of light commercial vehicles manufactured and marketed by Japanese manufacturer Toyota. The majority of these vehicles are sold as pickup trucks or cabin chassis variants although they can be configured in a variety of body styles. Most countries use the Hilux name for the entire life of this series but in North America, Hilux's name has retired in 1976 to support Truck, Truck Pickup, or Truck . In North America the popular option package, SR5 (Sport Rally 5-Speed), is used everyday as the model name for trucks, although option packages are also used on other Toyota models like the 1972-1979 Corolla. In 1984, Toyota Trekker, the Hilux camper version, was renamed as 4Runner in Australia and North America, and as Hilux Surf in Japan. In 1995, Toyota introduced a new pickup model, Tacoma in North America, stopping the Hilux/Pickup there. The 4Runner is now a full SUV, and the newer models do not resemble Tacoma.

Generasi pertama (N10; 1968-1972)

Hilux began production in March 1968 as a RN10 in the form of a short wheelbase with a 1.5L engine, producing 77 PS (57 kW) in Japanese market specs, and in Japan it is available at the retail chain of Japanese Toyota dealers called Toyota Store > and Toyopet Store. Modified engine enough for a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). It was upgraded to a 1,600L inline-four engine in February 1971.

In April 1969, a long wheelbase version was added to the range. The short wheelbase version also continues to be produced for years. The long wheelbase version was not sold in the North American market until 1972, allowing the Datsun Truck to maintain a strong market presence. Hilux is offered in lieu of Toyota Crown, Toyota Corona and Toyota Corona Mark II pickup trucks in Japan, as Crown, Corona and Corona Mark II are repositioned as passenger sedans.

Regardless of the name "Hilux", it is a luxury vehicle only when compared to Stout. Hilux was engineered and assembled by Hino Motors to replace the previous vehicle originating from Hilux, called Briska in a niche under the larger and older Stout - it replaced Stout entirely in some markets. For the North American market, the only body style is a normal taxi-short bed and all of them are rear-wheel drive. It used a typical A-arm truck setup and springs in front and live shaft with leaf springs in the back. Manual four speed transmission is standard.

Generasi kedua (N20; 1972-1978)

In May 1972, Hilux's 1973 model was released as RN20. Dubbed "???? (RokeHi) a Portmanteau from Rocket Hilux", a more comfortable interior is determined along with an exterior update. A 2.25m (7.4 ft) "long sleep" is the first choice in North America, although such a version has been available worldwide since April 1969. It received the chassis code "RN25". The 2.0-liter 18R engine is also available in Japan, as well as with the three-speed automatic transmission available. The 2.0-liter automatic only managed a top speed of 136.1 km/h (84.6 mph) in the South African road test period, although it claimed 89 kW (121 PS).

Hilux was radically redesigned in 1975 to become larger and with improved standard equipment. In North America the new version also means the introduction of a much larger engine (2.2Ã,¨L) 20R and SR5 trim class package. The five speed manual transmission is optional. In North America, the Hilux name was completely removed for "Trucks" that year, after being removed from brochures and commercials beginning in 1973. Some North American motor-trainers started building Toyota motor homes with this chassis.

Generasi ketiga (N30, N40; 1978-1983)

The redesigned Hilux was introduced in August 1978, with the 4WD variant introduced in January 1979. The 4WD variant - not offered with a smaller engine of two liters "18R" - featured some common technologies with the larger Toyota Land Cruiser. Four-wheel drive production stopped in July 1983, but several variations of 2WD continued in parallel with the next generation. The L series diesel engine was offered on the 2WD variant from September 1979 and 4WD variant in March 1983. In Japan, Hilux joined the new Toyota MasterAce, sharing load-carrying duties, and sold at Toyota Store along Hilux.

In North America Hilux sees the use of four wheel drive. It has a front wheel suspension and a strong leaf. The body sees a redesign that includes single round headlights and a less complex body. This new 4WD setting displays a case of gear-driven RF1A transfer. The transfer case is unique because its low-range reduction section can be replicated, using what some people call double or triple transfer cases. This results in a much lower overall gear ratio. It was the first Hilux available with automatic transmission.

In 1981 a vehicle development agreement was established between Toyota, Winnebago Industries, and two other aftermarket customizers. This is to enable Toyota to enter the SUV market in North America. Vehicles resulting from this collaboration are Trekker (Winnebago), Wolverine, and Trailblazer (Griffith). All three use cabin and chassis RV Hilux 4ÃÆ' â € "4, and the back of all-fiberglass (Trailblazer has a steel bed with fiberglass top). There are at least 1,500 Trekker, 400 Trailblazers and a number of unknown Wolverines sold in North America. The research and development work at Trekker leads to the development of 4Runner/Hilux Surf, which was released in 1984.

Towards the end of production of the SR5 (1983Ã,½ model year), Toyota introduced the luxury of Mojave for the US market as a limited production model (3,500 units) with options not available on other Toyota pickups. List at a price of US $ 8,308 , it features bucket seats, two multiplex speaker radios, front and back chrome bumpers, and no Toyota logo either on the grille or tailgate. Yacht, power steering and air conditioning controls are optional. This is supported by the standard SR5 2.4Ã, L (150Ã,  ° C) inline four.

In Thailand, this model is sold as Toyota Hilux Super Star.

Generasi keempat (N50, N60, N70; 1983-1988)

The redesign of August 1983 (sold as a 1984 model vehicle in North America) introduced an extended cabin Xtracab option, with six inches of space behind the seat for storage inside the cabin. This "1984" model was brought on top of the 22R carburetor engine while the 1984 model also saw the introduction of 22R-E injected fuel. Two diesel engines are also offered, 2L and 2L-T turbocharged. The diesels were discontinued in the US after the 1986 model, this is due to higher performance expectations from customers and the widespread availability of cheap gasoline. The following year saw the introduction of the turbocharged option, 22R-TE, possibly due to increased competition from Nissan that already offers the current V6 truck. The sturdy front shaft exchanged for independent torsion bar suspension settings in 4ÃÆ' â € "4 models in 1986, and automatic differential termination options for front differential (alternatives to automatic lock hubs) and electronic transfer boxes were added as well. At the end of 1986 for the 1987 model the truck underwent a minor interior and exterior design, which included a new grille, a new 1-piece front bumper, an updated interior with a tall door panel full of imitation leather stitching at the base and a DLX model, cluster is more rounded and featuring imitation leather seams on it, the dashboard displays a shorter tray than the previous model, the steering wheel changed from black to gray, red, brown, or blue depending on the color of the interior, the radio bezel is also a color suitable for the rest of the interior, the SR-5 tach gauge cluster has a pattern on the changing face of the grid pattern into a horizontal line, the outer door mirrors are also changed to have more stream lined appearance, the faceplate for heater control is also redesigned. The V6 engine was introduced in 1988. The Hilux-based 4Runner that makes entries in Australia, North America and the UK is based on this generation Hilux; in some other markets, such as Japan, it is called Hilux Surf.

Toyota introduced the new generation of Hilux in most markets in late 1988 but the fourth generation remained in production until 1997 in South Africa. Toyota says this is due to South Africa's "content laws" that make it cheaper to continue generating fourth-generation Hilux, than to retool the factory for the fifth generation.

In Thailand, this generation is sold as Toyota Hilux Hero.

Fifth generation (N80, N90, N100, N110; 1988-1997)

The subsequent redesign, in 1988, resulted in a longer wheelbase option, 3,099 mm (122 in) instead of 2,616 mm (103 in) for a regular wheelbase. The cargo box wall of one part removes the rust-prone layer found on the previous model. V6 Xtracab SR5 won Truck of the Year award from Trend Motor magazine that year. The Xtra Cabs now display more space in the back of the front seat than the last generation that allows optional jump seats for rear passengers, a feature that is more in line with competitors at the time.

In 1991, American production began at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California (VIN on these cars starting with '4T'), but some trucks sold in the United States for 91-95 years are still produced in Japan (VIN starts with 'JT').

Hilux received a minor facelift in 1991 (for the 1992 model), which was a minor change of grille and a newly adopted Toyota emblem.

During this generation Toyota stopped Hilux in the United States, replacing it with the new Tacoma for the 1995 model.

Toyota shifted production from Hilux Mighty-X (fifth generation) to Hilux Tiger (sixth generation) in the late 1990s and made it a global export hub. The Thai-made Hilux Tiger goes through the following versions:

  • 1998-1999: Hilux Tiger with engine 3.0Ã, L 5L
  • 2000-2001: Hilux Tiger with EFI 3.0L L 5L-E

In 2005, Toyota halted production of Hilux trucks for the Japanese market. This is the last generation Hilux to be available (or built) in Japan.

Hilux Sport Rider

Toyota introduced the mid-size SUV variant of Hilux in 1998 for some specific markets, known as the Hilux Sport Rider. Sport Rider is a rare model, sold in several Asian markets, including Thailand and Nepal. Based on Hilux, both in style and basics, this is similar in concept to the Toyota 4Runner - however, Sport Rider is not a rejuvenated 4Runner. Riders and Sport Rider suspensions come from Hilux, including independent Hilux front suspension and rear-end popping. The model started as a four-door pickup truck, but was modified into a wagon when it arrived in Thailand by Thai Auto Works Co., Thailand's majority-owned company in which Toyota owns a 20 percent stake. The vehicle is distributed by Toyota Tsusho Thailand, Toyota forklift importer.

Sport Rider arrived in 1998 with a 5l 5L engine for Prerunner (2WD) and 5L-E for 4WD, then 1KZ-TE only for 4WD arrived in 2001 and the fog lamp is built on the front bumper, and the new engine arrives - 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV with new front bumper, new projector headlights and taillights new. Toyota stopped Sport Rider in 2004, and replaced it in 2005 with Toyota Fortuner.

Generasi ketujuh (AN10, AN20, AN30; 2004-2015)

The seventh generation Hilux (AN10/AN20/AN30), part of the IMV program, started production in Thailand during August 2004. Three pickup truck body variants were originally produced: Two-door two-door cabins (called by Toyota as IMV1), Xtra Cab two doors IMV2), and the four-door Double Cabin (IMV3). In September 2008, Toyota released Smart Cab, a four-door with hidden hidden doors. IMV program also raises SUV Toyota Innova (AN40) minivan (IMV4) and Toyota Fortuner (AN50/AN60) (IMV5). The similar Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, introduced in February 2004 for the 2005 model, is based on the 4Runner chassis, while the AN10/AN20/AN30 Hilux spacecraft on a revamped version of the ladder found in previous versions. Hilux increases in size and is then classified as mid-size pick up.

Hilux models sold in Asian, European, Middle Eastern and Oceania markets are built and assembled in Thailand. In Thailand, this vehicle is called Hilux Vigo, or just Vigo. For other European and South African markets, Hilux is built in Durban, South Africa. In December 2009, it was the best-selling vehicle in South Africa. Sold in South America made in Argentina, like the previous generation Hilux. However, machines were built in Japan (where they are also used in Prado) instead of Argentina.

In Malaysia, Hilux is only available in 2.5 L with single cabin or double cab option. The dual cabin model has an automatic transmission variant. Using the same engine as other Asian countries (in-line, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC Turbo Diesel with direct rail direct injection), but the machine used in Malaysia differs in its maximum output of 75 kW (101 hp) at 3600 rpm and maximum torque of 260Ã, N? M (192Ã, lbf? Ft) at 1600-2400 rpm.

In Singapore, Hilux is available as a single taxi with a 2.5 L engine or double cabin with a 3.0 L engine. Leading fleet customers include private taxi operators, for whom multiple taxi models offer additional space flexibility, and Singapore Police, Pakistan Police, Syrian Police, and Royal Bhutanese Police who hired him as a patrol vehicle.

This generation was downgraded to Argentina on March 2, 2005 in Buenos Aires with the market launch in April.

Two Hilux pickups were included in the last few years of the Dakar Rally by the Imperial Toyota team in South Africa. Giniel de Villiers driver reached third place in 2012, second place overall in 2013, fourth in 2014, and again second place in 2015. But this is a highly modified non-production version built around a special racing tubular chassis and use a larger capacity of the Toyota V8 engine.

This generation is also sold in Finland as TruckMasters OX by Truck Masters Finland. Due to the modified rear suspension, the car is registered in Finland as a light truck. OX is only available with 3.0 D-4D diesel engine.

facelift 2008

The facelift version of Hilux was unveiled by Toyota Malaysia distributor UMW Toyota Motor in August 2008. Toyota has released the left hand drive Hilux Vigo facelift in August 2008 while the right-handed facelifted drive model is expected to be released in September 2008. The facelift model was introduced to Philippines in October 2008.

Toyota also introduced a four-door rear access system called "Smart Cab" to replace all Xtra Cab models in E and G grade. The Smart Cab model was developed in Thailand and sold only in the Thai market.

facelift 2011

On July 13, 2011, Toyota announced that Hilux will receive improvements, including a redesigned front end design and other external styling changes, changes to the interior and a new turbocharged diesel engine capable of achieving 106 kW (142 hp) and 343 Â ° LU ( 253Ã, lb? Ft) of torque, as well as lower fuel consumption compared to the previous model. This update was originally launched in Thailand.

2012 Hilux Vigo Champ

Hilux Vigo "Champ" was introduced in Thailand in August 2012 as a significant "minor change" with a new front view and a revamped interior to reinforce the impression of luxury. The front is redesigned from the front of the A-pillar. With the exception of doors, roofs and tailgate, others are novelty: new guard, new headlamps, new bumper, new hood, new three-bar grille, new rear lights, new rear bumper, new model badges, and more. There are also new mirrors and new design wheels. The interior has a new top dashboard design with a new horizontal center instrument cluster. Perceived quality is enhanced through the adoption of darker end results with greater color consistency throughout the interior. The high-end Double Cab version now comes with a DVD player, rear camera and Bluetooth functionality.

This small upgrade raises emission standards to Euro 4, updates the four-speed automatic transmission to five speeds, improves the performance of the 3.0-liter model from 163 to 171 hp (122 to 128 kW), increasing torque from 343 to 360 Â ° N? m (253-266Ã, ft? lb) for a five-speed automatic transmission, and the Predunner 4x2 SmartCab is introduced with automatic transmission. Other changes include a more efficient fuel injection system and the addition of a headrest in the double rear cabin seats.

Eighth generation (AN120, AN130; 2015-present)

The eighth generation Toyota Hilux is officially released simultaneously on 21 May 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand and Sydney, Australia. The markets of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia have also adopted a new name, "Toyota Hilux Revo". Reputation

Hilux has earned a reputation for outstanding robustness and reliability during continuous heavy use or even abuse.

This reputation is highlighted in some episodes of the BBC's Top iGe automotive event. In series 3, episodes 5 and 6, a 1988 N50 Hilux diesel with 305,775 km (190,000 mi) on the odometer is subjected to tremendous abuse of severe structural damage, but is still running after repair with only the distinctive tools to be found in the box truck equipment. This Hilux became one of the background decorations in Top Gear studio. In the 8th series later, episode 3, Hilux was selected by Jeremy Clarkson as his platform to create amphibious vehicles, and at Top Gear: Polar Special Clarkson and James May followed the modified Hilux 2007 model to the magnetic north pole of Northern Canada - made the first motor vehicle truck to make it to the magnetic north pole. The camera crew vehicle from this episode was then pushed to near the top of Iceland's volcano eruption (EyjafjallajÃÆ'¶kull) by James May in Series 15, Episode 1.

In 1999, Hilux appeared in a series of television commercials "Bugger" in New Zealand and Australia. The advertisement was banned in New Zealand after receiving 120 complaints but was later restored.

The world record was achieved by a support crew for participants at Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race 2008/2009. The crew traveled on a specially modified Toyota Hiluxes modified by the Arctic Trucks, completing a journey of more than 5,000 km (3,100 miles) from Novo, the Russian Scientific Station in Antarctica to the South Pole Geographic and back again, making them the first 4ÃÆ'â € " 4s to reach the South Pole. The journey back 2,500 km (1,600 mi) from the South Pole to Novo Station finished in 8 days and 17 hours.

Used by militant group

Due to its durability and reliability, Toyota Hilux, along with the larger Toyota Land Cruiser, has become popular among militant groups in war-ravaged areas as "technical". According to Andrew Exum's terrorism analyst, Hilux is "a vehicle equivalent to the AK-47. It's everywhere for rebel warfare." US counter-terror officials have asked Toyota how extremist Salafi jihad groups from the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant have apparently acquired a large number of Toyota Hiluxes and Land Cruisers. Mark Wallace, CEO of Counter-Extremism Project says, "Unfortunately, Toyota Land Cruiser and Hilux are effectively part of the ISIS brand."

The 1980s Toyota war between Libya and Chad was named for the use of Hilux's large trucks as a "light cavalry" vehicle.
