Mission Revival | Architectural Styles of America and Europe

The Mission Revival Style is an architectural movement that began in the late nineteenth century for the revivalism and reinterpretation of the colonial style, inspired by Spanish missions in the late 18th and early 19th century in California.

The Mission Awakening Movement enjoyed its greatest popularity between 1890 and 1915, in many residential, commercial, and institutional structures - especially schools and train depots - that use this recognizable style of architecture. It evolved into and absorbed by the more articulated Spanish Colonial Revival Style, established in 1915 at the Panama-California Exposition.

Influences

All of the 21 Franciscan Mission Alta California (founded 1769-1823), including the chapel and its supporting structure, share certain design characteristics. This similarity arose because the Franciscan missionaries all came from the same place from the previous service in Spain and the Colonial Mexico City in New Spain. The new Spanish religious buildings found by the Franciscans and emulated are the Spanish Colonial style, which in turn comes from the Renaissance and the Baroque example in Spain. Also, unlimited availability and variety of building materials other than adobe near mission locations or imported into Alta California limited design options. Finally, their native California missionaries and laborers have minimal construction skills and experience.

Characteristics

Original document

The mission style of necessity and security evolved around enclosed courtyards, using large brick walls with large, unadorned plaster surfaces, limited fenestration and door piercing, low-pitched roofs with long, elongated roofs and non-flammable clay tiles, and thick curved arches. from the dock. The exterior walls are lined with white plaster (plaster), which with its broad sides protects the adobe brick walls from the rain. Other features include a long exterior arcade, enfilade interior and space rooms, semi-independent bell-gables, and on the more affluent mission of curved 'Baroque' gables on the main facade with towers.

Awakening

These architectural elements are replicated, in varying degrees, in accuracy, and in proportion, in the new Mission Revival structure. Along with the awakening of the original style is the awareness in California of a mission that actually faded into ruins and their restoration campaign, and the nostalgia in the country rapidly changed to a 'simpler time' like Ramona novel popularized in time. Contemporary construction materials and practices, earthquake codes and building usage make structural and religious architectural components especially aesthetic decor, while service elements such as tiled roofs, sun wall and interior protectors, and outdoor shade and courtyard arcades are still functional.

The architectural style of the Resurrection of Mission, and the Spanish Resurrection Colonial style, has historical associations, nostalgic, cultural-environmental, and climate suitability created for the dominant historical regional vernacular architectural style in the Southwest United States, especially in California.
