Basic history

Initially Lahore Stadium , the land was renamed in 1974 in honor of former Libyan President Colonel Muammar Gaddafi after a speech he gave at the 2nd meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Lahore that supported Pakistan's right to pursue nuclear weapons. The stadium became the headquarters of the Pakistan Cricket Council.

In 1995-96, the Gaddafi Stadium was renovated by architect Nayyar Ali Dada for the 1996 Cricket World Cup. The redesign of the Chest was done in Mughal style, with red brick and hand stretched. The chest also has a plastic seat mounted on the existing concrete bench. The bottom under the tribune is closed and converted into a shop for boutiques and offices. Gaddafi Stadium is the first in Pakistan equipped with modern spotlights that have their own standby electric generator.

On October 23, 2011 Pakistan Cricket Council discussed the replacement of the stadium after Gaddafi's death, to support a new government in Libya. The Punjab Olympic Association made similar requests in late October 2011 to the provincial chief minister, "I do not think his profile is inspiring enough to connect with the identity of our cricket stadium." However, in April 2012, it seems that the stadium's name will not change.

Gaddafi Stadium became the largest cricket stadium in Pakistan that used to have a capacity of 60,000 spectators, until the redesign of its cage reduced the capacity to 27,000.

Cricket history

Three hat-tricks have been taken at the stadium, by Peter Petherick of New Zealand against Pakistan, October 9, 1976, Wasim Akram of Pakistan against Sri Lanka, March 6, 1999 and Mohammad Sami of Pakistan against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan has enjoyed some memorable moments on the pitch, including the fifth wicket of 281 between Javed Miandad and Asif Iqbal against New Zealand in 1976 and a round and 324 wins against New Zealand in 2002.

On March 3, 2009, the third day scheduled from the second Test of the 2008-09 Sri Lanka tour in Pakistan, a Sri Lankan team convoy was attacked by armed militants at the Liberty Roundabout, near the Gaddafi stadium. Eight Sri Lankan players were injured, including Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene. The Sri Lankan team was appointed from Gaddafi Stadium to the nearest air base, from where they were evacuated back to Sri Lanka, the event marked the end of international cricket in Pakistan.

However, on May 19, 2015, Zimbabwe's cricket team landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport to become the first Full Member country touring Pakistan since March 2009. On March 5, 2017, the 2017 Super Finals of Pakistan 2017 was played at the stadium. Pakistan won the ODI and T20I series comfortably.

In August 2017, PCBs together with the ICC began to increase international cricket in Pakistan. With that, under tight security, PCB plans a World XI tour of Pakistan for three T20Is.

In August 2017, Thilanga Sumathipala, president of Sri Lanka Cricket, said that he wanted to play at least one of three T20I matches in Lahore, Pakistan during October. In March 2009, Sri Lanka's cricket team was attacked by terrorists while traveling to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Since then, the only side of the Test to visit Pakistan is Zimbabwe, when they toured during May 2015. The two current Sri Lankan teams, Chamara Kapugedera and Suranga Lakmal were on the bus during the terrorist attacks of 2009, and both can be selected for the T20I squad for this series.

In September 2017, the match is confirmed, with the final T20I match of the series scheduled to be played in Lahore. Sri Lanka Cricket said that players have "contractual obligations" to play matches in Lahore, but it is not possible to award a penalty to players who choose not to visit Pakistan. However, on October 14, 2017, the Sri Lankan team expressed its reluctance to travel to Pakistan, requesting the equipment be moved to a neutral venue. On October 16, 2017, Sri Lanka Cricket insisted that the match in Lahore would go as planned, but their limited captain, Upul Tharanga, had retired from the match. Despite concerns from the players, team manager Asanka Gurusinha feels that a competitive squad will be named. On October 19, 2017, Sri Lanka's chief elector Graham Labrooy said that players who do not travel to Lahore are unlikely to be selected for two other T20I matches. The squad for T20I equipment was named two days later, with Thisara Perera elected as captain.

The Sri Lankan squad arrived in Lahore under "extraordinary" security and walked into the team's hotel with a bomb-proof bus. Ahead of T20I in Lahore, Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala said that the team has the privilege of being in Pakistan and that it will help support the country in organizing more tours. Najam Sethi, chairman of the PCB, said that the equipment will be the start of international cricket back to the country, with him expecting every country to play in Pakistan by the end of 2020. Pakistan continues to win the T20I 3-0 series.

The venue also hosts several major matches as part of the Blink 2018 Cricket World Cup.
