Histori

The origins of Tufts Medical Center date back to 1796 when the Boston Dispensary was established as the first permanent medical facility in New England, and one of the first in the United States. Early donors included Paul Revere.

In 1894, Boston Floating Hospital was founded by a Congregational minister, Reverend Rufus Tobey. At that time, many believed in the therapeutic cleaning and therapeutic qualities of sea air to improve health, and Tobey had heard of a hospital ship for children in New York. Over the next 33 years, two consecutive ships are home to a hospital for children in Boston Harbor. In 1931, after the Second Floating ship for Children was destroyed in a fire, the hospital was moved to a permanent building on land.

The New England Medical Center was founded in 1930 as a combination of Boston Dispensary, Boston Floating Hospital for Children, and the Supervisor of Tufts College. The Pratt Diagnostic Clinic was added in 1946, and in 1950 when the Tufts University School of Medicine and the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine moved to Chinatown, the name was extended to the New England Medical Center Hospital.

In 1968, his name was changed to the Tufts-New England Medical Center (Tufts-NEMC) to reflect the growing relationship between hospitals and universities. In 1970, the NEMC council met with the Tufts Trustees to make an outline of a mutually agreed cooperation agreement until the late 1970s when tensions between organizations resulted in the "Tufts" being dropped from the name.

After a period of intense competition between organizations during the 1980s, the NEMC board reached an agreement with the Tufts Trustees in 1991 and the name was changed back to Tufts-New England Medical Center. The affiliate agreements they adopt still apply. Children's hospitals still reflect her heritage in her name: Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Health Center.

The name was shortened to Tufts Medical Center on March 4, 2008. A press release on rebranding said:

The relationship between hospitals and universities is uniquely close considering that both institutions operate independently and will continue to do so. The Tufts University School of Medicine campus is steps away from the Medical Center in downtown Boston, such as Tufts University Dentistry School, Sackler School of Postgraduate Biomedical Sciences and Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition and Policy. Seventeen of the 18 medical faculties of Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) are located at Tufts Medical Center.

Former Director and CEO of Tufts Medical Center, Ellen Zane said "the added benefit of our new name is shorter and easier to say and remember." The tag line for the new name ad is "We've done a little operation on our behalf."

President Tufts University, Anthony P. Monaco, M.D., Ph.D., and Dean of TUSM Harris M. Berman, M.D. serving at Board Medical Center, with Dr. Wagner serves on the TUSM Advisory Board.

Tufts Medical Center is a partner with Tufts University in the Clinical and Translational Research Institute, funded by the Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health.
