Histori
Freestyle music began in many places almost simultaneously around 1989, with demonstrations of heeling talent to music featured in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands within three years of each other. The main unifying element among the groups is interest in more creative obedience demonstrations and dog training, love of music, and, in many cases, the inspiration of horse sports called the musical kur, which is a more creative and dynamic form of dressage.
The first official music-free music group, Canine Sports International , was founded in British Columbia, Canada, in 1991. Soon, other groups followed in the United States and Britain. Each region began to develop its own style, with many American groups promoting more routines and trick-based costumes. English groups focus more on heel work and on dogs, and less on costumes and designs. Freestyle music has become more common in animal talent shows and special acts.

Technique
Teaching a dog to work on both sides of the handler's body, not just the left side as in standard obedience, is the first step to freestyle. The first coach breaks the routine into pieces with only two or three movements connected together, and as they progress, these pieces are linked together.
There are two types of freestyle music, freestyle heeling (also known as heel to music) and freestyle music.
Heeling free style
Freestyle heeling focuses on the ability of the dog to remain in heel position variation while the handler moves to the music. In heel work for music, dogs and coaches stay close to each other at all times. Sending dogs away or doing distance work is not part of the routine, with the almost invisible remaining dog moored to the coach. Pivots, and moving diagonally, backward, and forward to an appropriate musical theme are important for routines. Jumping, weaving, rolling over, passing coach feet and anything considered "immobile" are not allowed.
Music-free style
Freestyle music demands that dogs perform various tricks and other obedience talents. In the free style of music, heel work can be combined with other movements such as weaving feet, sending dogs away, moving together in the distance, and more dramatic tricks like jumping, spinning, bending, rolling. Dancing on the spot, and other innovative acts in which the dog plays dance moves from the coach is encouraged. A popular finishing trick for some routines is for the dog to jump on the coach's arm, or through his back.
Competition
Currently, there are several organizations that set up competitive freestyle, such as the World Canine Freestyle Organization , Canine Freestyle Federation , and The Sports Dogs Association in America United States, Canadian Freestyle Organization's Canadian Freestyle Organization Paws 2 Canine Freestyle in the United Kingdom, and Pawfect K9 Freestyle Club in Japan. In the UK, this sport is called Heelwork to Music and is the official sport of the Kennel club.
The rules of competition vary from group to group, and from country to country, but are largely based on various technical and artistic reward points. All routines are done free of training aids or leashes, except in a few beginner categories. Competition can be done as a single dog-and-handler team, as a pair of dogs and handlers, or as a team full of three or more dogs and handlers. Generally, there is only one dog per handler for the competition.
Both in this type of competition, the choice of music and the way the routine reflects the music is important. Routines do not follow rhythm, no matter how well run, do not get good grades.
Freestyle exhibition is a no-handed routine designed to demonstrate the full creativity and excitement that music style can offer. Although it is very entertaining and represents what most people see on television or on shows, it is possible to move, props, hints, and costumes that are normally not allowed on the competition circuit.
