Pembelajaran eksperimental

In the early 1970s, Kolb and Ron Fry (now both at the Weatherhead Management School) developed the Experiential Learning Model (ELM), which consisted of four elements:

  • concrete experience,
  • the observations and reflections on that experience,
  • the formation of an abstract concept based on reflection,
  • test new concepts,
  • (repeat).

These four elements are the essence of a learning spiral that can start with one of four elements, but usually begins with concrete experience.

Learning Style Inventory

Kolb is well-known in education for Learning Style Inventory (LSI). The model builds on the idea that learning preferences can be explained using two continuum:

  • Active experiments <-> Reflective observation
  • Abstract conceptualization <-> Concrete experience.

The result is four types of learners: convergent (Active experiment - Abstract conceptualization), accommodators (Active experiments - Concrete experience), assimilators (Reflective Observation - Abstract conceptualization), and divers (Reflective observation - Concrete experience). LSI is designed to determine individual learning preferences.
