The Chevrolet Impala (fourth generation) is a full-size car manufactured by Chevrolet for models from 1958 to 1970. The 1965 impala is all new, while the 1967 and 1969 models feature new bodies on the same redesigned perimeter frame which was introduced in the 1965 model. All Impalas of this generation receive an annual facelift, distinguishing each model year. Throughout the early 1960s, the basic body design of the Chevrolet became increasingly subtle, while the bright trim that is part of the Impala package adds more than a touch of luxury to the look. The same pattern is followed in the interior, where the best materials and equipment offered by Chevrolet are shown. In short, Impala is on its way to becoming a kind of junior Cadillac, which, both for the company and for its customers, is fine.

Histori

1965

Completely redesigned in 1965, Impala set an all-time annual industry sales record of more than 1 million units in the US; which has never been fixed. The new full-size Chevy features dramatically rounded edges, and a new front end with new hood contours, curved and unframed skates (for models without pillars), and sharper angle glass with newly re-shaped ventilation windows. Sport Coupes wear a sleek semi-rear roof line, and wheel prints are also revised. Chevrolet promotes Wide-Stance design, tightly tied windshield, and enhanced full-coil suspension. The two-tone instrument panel installs the gauge in the area hidden in front of the driver. The "X" frame is dropped for the new full-gear perimeter wide Girder frame that reduces the size of the inner driveline tunnel and the redesigned suspension. Two-range Powerglide, as well as manual transmission Synchro-Mesh 3- and 4-speed available. Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission is offered for the first time. As in previous years, Impalas features more chrome trim inside and out, with tufted fringes and door panels plus simulated walnut ornaments on lower instrument panels.

Engine options include six-cylinder inline as well as Chevy small blocks and large V8 blocks. Automatic transmission buyers are given the option of three newly introduced Turbo Hydra-Matic for the newly introduced Mark IV big-block machine, displacing 396 cubic inches. The long-term 409-cubic-inch (6.7Ã, L) "W" engine was discontinued at the beginning of the 1965 model year, so the initial 65s production gets 409, available only in 4-barrel options 340 and 400 horsepower. 396 The new Turbo Jet V8 is the first General Motors engine to receive the Rochester Quadra-Jet four-barrel carburetor that will be the mainstay until the early 1980s. The new 396 is available in 325-horsepower version with a compression ratio of 10.25 to 1 and a high-performance or hydraulic lift or version with compression ratio of 11 to 1, a solid lift lift, and 425 horsepower.

At a price of $ 200, a four-door Impan Sport Sedan can be transformed into Impala Caprice that forms a name destined for decades of life. Referenced as Regular Z18 Production Options, Caprice's select group includes black grille, vinyl top with Fleur de lis trim, unique wheel cover, and narrow threshold mold. The new interior is the most luxurious ever seen in Chevrolet, and a series of comfort/convenience features. Fabrically stitched door panels are simulated walnut accents, and contour-bearing seats using a combination of fabric and vinyl. All of this aims to give Chevy buyers a "one-of-a-kind" sense of Cadillac's look and ride. His sales success encouraged Chevrolet to make the full-scale V8-only Caprice for 1966.

1966

The Impala 1966 only received a minor facelift from its predecessor which included a revised horizontal front grille in the front and a new rectangular rear light replacing the three round lamps used on full-sized Chevy every year since 1958 with the exception of 1959, and beltline chrome strip was added in response to a complaint about the parking door slam on a clean '65 model. The standard three-column replacement manual manual is now fully synchronized, and the new 250-cubic inch six-cylinder engine replaces the previous 230-inch-inch six while the Turbo Turbo V-8 has a 283-cubic-inch power. remains the base of the V-8 engine. Optional engines include a 275-horsepower 327-cubic-inch Turbo Fire V-8, an upgraded 396-cubic V-8 inch Turbo-Jet at 325 horsepower, or two new 427-cubic inch Turbojet V8 from 390 horsepower with a compression ratio 10.5 to 1 and a hydraulic lift or high performance version rated 425 horsepower with a compression ratio of 11 to 1 and a solid lifter. The four-speed manual transmission is offered with all V8 engines, while the two-speed Powerglide is the only automatic transmission offered with a six-cylinder engine and Turbo Fire V8 283 and 327-cubic-inch, and a three-speed Turbo Hydramatic. limited to 396 and 390-horsepower versions of the 427 V-8. Impala was the # 2 best-selling converter in the US in 1966, with 38,000 sold.

1967

The 1967-size Chevrolet was redesigned with an improved Coke bottle styling. The dimensions remain more or less the same, still on a 119 inch wheelbase, four inches longer than the Chevrolet Chevelle mid-size. Impala Sport Coupes has an elegant fastback roofline, which flows in an unbroken line to the rear deck. In accordance with federal regulations, safety features were built into the Impalas during 1967 and 1968 year models, including fully absorbing steering columns, side marker lights, and shoulder belts for closed models. Most of the engine offerings are a carryover from 1966 including a base 250 cubic inch Turbo Thrift 6 (155 horsepower) and 283 cubic inches Turbo Fire V-8 (195 horsepower), and optional 275-horsepower 327 cubic inches Turbo Fire V-8 and 325-horsepower 396 cubic-inch Turbo Jet V-8, with 385-horsepower 427 cubic inches Turbo Jet V-8 is now the top bidding as 425-horsepower version of 427 offered in 1966 not listed in the 1967 specification. Powerglide two automatic acceleration is the only non-stop transmission offered with 250 6 and 283 V-8, but the three-speed hydraulic turbo is now available with 327 V-8 along with big-block 396 and 427 V-8s. New options for 1967 include front disc brakes (standard with option SS-427), 8-track stereo player, fiber optic light monitoring system and vacuum electrical door lock. Cloth-and-vinyl coatings are standard in the most enclosed body styles, but all-vinyl coatings are a new option at an additional cost in multiple colors on all sedan and coupe body styles (before all vinyl trims are offered as option on the Sport Coupe and Sport Sedan style body hardtop in "black" only since 1963), and keep the standard equipment on the convertible and station train models, again in several colors. All Impala models for 1967 also feature an improved door panel with a carpet at the bottom. The four-door black version of this vehicle, nicknamed "Baby," was featured prominently on the CW Supernatural TV show. It is owned by Dean Winchester and has been in their family for over 40 years.

1968

The front of the 1968 model receives a similar facelift to the 1965 model, while the rear bumper has a three-dimensional "horseshoe" rear light. The official Custom Coupe, formerly exclusive to Caprice, becomes available as Impala. Most of the Chevrolet has a hidden windshield wipers. The luxurious new interior also helps attract buyers. Impala exceeds the sales list, as it has for years. The full-sized car can have 250-cubic inch inches, 307-cubic inches V-8, either from a pair of 327 of 250 or 275 horsepower, or 325-horsepower 396-cubic inches V-8. Topping the list is 427 large, rated 385 or 425 horsepower. The two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission is still available with 250 six-cylinder and 307 or 327 V-8, but the three-speed Turbo Hydramatic can be ordered with all V-8 engines on Impala Sport Sedan and Custom coupe. "Astro Vent" is an option for Custom Coupe that includes fresh air vents, the same unit used for optional air conditioning, sans in the middle of the upper vent. Cars equipped with this option get full-size glass doors minus the ventilation windows.

1969

The 1969 Impala and a full-sized Chevrolet are restyled with hard body lines and front bumper wrapped around unchained grille and unventilated front windows in all new models. The 119-inch axis (3,023 mm), inner frame and skeleton frames were brought from the 1965 model - along with the pillared four-door sedan roofline and station wagon. The train station was renamed Kingswood - returning to pre-1962 Chevrolet practice using different nameplates on the cart than any other model. Inside, the front seat headrests are now standard equipment because the federal safety mandate and ignition switch are moved from the dashboard to the steering column and duplicated as a key for the steering wheel when keys have been removed, Federal mandates are valid with 1970 models but introduced a year earlier on all cars General Motors. The instrument panel is redesigned and highlighted by a new steering wheel.

The 1969 Impala also offers a new variable-ratio power steering unit designed by GM as an optional equipment along with a rarely ordered "Liquid Tire Chain" option, which is a vacuum-activated switch that will spray ice on the rear tire (UPC option) code is "V75"). The standard engine is enlarged to 235 hp (175 kW) 327 cubic inches V8 with optional engine options including a new Turbo V8 350 cubic-inch Turbo rated at 255 and 300 hp (220 kW), a 265 hp (198 kW). Turbo Jet V8 396 cubic inches, and Turbo V8 42 inch cubic inch with speed 335 and 390 hp (291 kW). The L72 425 horsepower engine is available in all B-Bodies. All V8 engines are now available with a three-speed Turbo Hydramatic transmission for the first time although a two-speed Powerglide is still offered with 327 and 350 V8s. During 1969 the model year of Impala production, including the Kingswood train amounted to 777,000 units, compared with 166,000 Caprices and Kingswood Wagon trains, 68,700 Biscaynes and Brookwood wagons, and 155,700 Bel Air and Townsman wagons. Total Impala for 1969 includes 768,000 produced with V-8 and 8,700 engines with six cylinders.

1970

The 1970 Impala received a minor facelift featuring a more conventional bumper under the grill replacing the wrap-around unit used in 1969 and a new triple vertical taillights. The fiberglass tire on 15-inch (380 mm) wheels is made with standard equipment along with 250 hp (186Ã, kW) 350 cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8 larger standards, on most models (250 cubic-inch quad-cylinder engine is now only offered on the Impala four-door sedan 1970, as well as the four-door sedan Biscayne and Bel Air this year). Optional V8 includes 300 hp (220 kW) 350 and Turbo Fir V8 4003 hp (198 kW) 400 cubic inches (not to be confused with Chevrolet Turbo Jet big-block 402 V8 (basically a boring 396) offered at Chevelles that year and Monte Carlos). At the top of the engine list, 427 large blocks were replaced by longer new strokes, Turbo Jet V8 454 cubic inches offered in 345 hp (257 kW) and 390 hp (290 kW) power ratings. Turbo Turbo Turbo six-cylinder engine, and Turbo 250-hp and 205-horsepower (198-kW) are designed for regular gasoline while 300 hp (220 kW) 350 Turbo Fire and 454 Turbo Jet engines require premium fuel. The three-speed manual transmission with column displacement is standard equipment as in previous years but the four-speed manual mounted on the floor with the Hurst shifter downgraded from the list of options for 1970 as well as the Strato bucket seat and center console previously offered on the coupe. Automatic transmission options include two-speed Powerglide at 250 6 s and 350 V8, and the three-speed Hydramatic Turbo is available with all engines. The powerful front-mounted discs are standard on the Custom and optional Impala coupe on all other models. The 1970 impala is one of the three remaining Chevrolet convertibles, with only 9,562 built. Interest in all fabric sizes has decreased. So is the attraction with a large sports car, which encourages the abandonment of Impala Super Sport. Output from full-sized Chevrolet fell sharply for the 1970 calendar year, below the million mark, partly as a result of a 65-day strike in the fall of 1970 - but the strike affected the early model's production in 1971. Sales Impala, as expected, ranked far in over another large Chevrolet with 612,800 Impalas built (6,500 six cylinders and 606,300 V-8) compared to 92,000 Caprices, 75,800 Bel Air and 35,400 Biscaynes, plus 162,000 station wagons for all series.

Right Hand Drive cars were manufactured in Canada for export to several countries such as Australia, UK, etc., until 1969. They used dashboard versions of dashboards from 1965 to 1969. Australian models were collected in Australia from kits as this reduced taxes on cars. Similar arrangements are applied in New Zealand even though corpses supplied from Canada are welded, painted and trimmed. Gallery
