BMW 5 Series Sedan Model Overview - BMW North America
src: www.bmwusa.com

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured by BMW since 1972. It is the successor of the New Class Sedan and is currently in the seventh generation.

Initially, the 5 Series is only available in sedan body style. The wagon/estate body style (called "Touring") was added in 1991 and the 5-door fastback (called "Gran Turismo") was produced from 2009 to 2017.

The first generation of the 5 Series is powered by a naturally aspirated 4-inline and straight-6 petrol engine. The following generations have been powered by inline-4, straight-6, V8 and V10 engines with natural aspirations and turbocharging. Since 1982, diesel engines have been included in the 5 Series range.

Series 5 is the second best-selling model of BMW after the 3 Series. On January 29, 2008, 5 million Series 5 was produced, a 530d Saloon at Carbon Black Metallic.

The naming convention of BMW's three-digit model begins with the first 5 Series, so the Series 5 is the first BMW model line to use "Series" in the name.

Since E28, all generations of the 5 Series have included the M version, called the BMW M5.

Generasi pertama (E12; 1972-1981)

The E12 is the first generation of the 5 Series, produced from 1972 to 1981. It replaces the New Class sedan and the initial 520 and 520i models powered by an inline-4 engine. A year after launch, the first of the models powered by the straight-6 - 525 engine was introduced.

There is no M5 model for the E12, but the E12 M535i is considered the precursor of the M5.

E12 was replaced by the E28 in 1981, although E12 production continued until 1984 in South Africa. Second generation (E28; 1981-1988) Second generation (E28; 1981-1988)

The E28 is the second generation of the 5 Series, which was manufactured from 1981 to 1988. Originally produced with 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder gasoline engines. In 1983, the diesel engine was available for the first time in Series 5. The E28 is the first 5 Series with the center console tilted toward the driver and an anti-lock brake (ABS) option.

The first BMW M5 was produced during the E28 generation. It's powered by S38B35 and M88/3 straight-six engines.

Third generation (E34; 1988-1996)

The E34 is the third generation of the 5 Series, which was produced from 1988 to 1996. It was launched in a sedan body style, with an expanded range in 1990 to incorporate the "Touring" wagon (estate) body style.

E34 is the first 5 Series available with a stylish body wagon, 525iX is the first 5 Series with all-wheel drive and V8 engine is also first available in Series 5 during the E34 generation. It also saw the introduction of stability control (ASC), traction control (ASC T) 6-speed manual transmission and adjustable attenuation (EDC) to the 5 Series range.

There are a large number of exceptional machines installed during its lifetime, as nine different engine families are used. It consists of a 4-cylinder, straight-six and a V8 engine.

The E34 M5 is powered by a straight-six S38 engine and is produced in the body style of the sedan and wagon. Fourth Generation (E39; 1995-2003) <4> Fourth generation (E39; 1995-2003)

E39 is the fourth generation of the 5 Series, which was sold from 1995 to 2004. It was launched in a sedan body style, with a wagon/estate body style (marketed as "Touring") introduced in 1996.

E39 is the first 5 Series that uses aluminum components in the front suspension. The proportion of chassis components using aluminum increased significantly for E39, to reduce weight. It is also the first 5 Series in which four-cylinder diesel engines are available.

The V8 model uses a recycled ball ball (like the previous generation 5 series), but rack and pinion steering is used for the first time, in four-cylinder and six-cylinder models. Unlike its predecessor E34 and E60 successor, the E39 is not available with all-wheel drive.

The E39 M5 sedan was introduced in 1998, powered by a 4.9 liter S62 V8 engine.

The E60/E61 introduces new electronic features to the Series 5, including iDrive, head-up display, active cruise control, active steering and voice control. Seventh generation (G30/G31/G38; 2017-Present)

The BMW G30/G31/G38 is the seventh generation of the 5 Series. It was officially announced in October 2016, and sales began in February 2017.

The body style of the span is:

  • 4-door sedan/sedan (G30)
  • 5-door rail/housing (G31)
  • The 4-door long-wheelbase tab (G38)

The GT 5 Series Fastback model of the previous generation is no longer part of the model range, since it has been moved to the Series 6 model range.

The G30 is based on the same modular platform as the Series 7 (G11). BMW plans to release a saloon and estate-style hybrid plug-in, 530e iPerformance , which will have an advanced driver-assist system found in Series 7.

The M5 version of the G30 has the F90 development code, and this is the first M5 to feature a BMW xDrive four wheel drive system. This is supported by the S63 evolution found in previous generations of the M5, the twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that produces 441 kW (600 PS, 591 bhp) and 750 N m (553 lb? Ft) of torque, and reaches 100 km/62 mph) in 3.4 seconds.
