The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law , commonly called AP Stylebook , is an English grammar and guide the use made by American journalists who worked or connected with the Associated Press over the last century to standardize mass communication. Although sold as a guide for journalists, this has been the main reference for most forms of corporate communications that have faced the public over the last half century. Stylebook offers basic reference for grammar, punctuation and reporting principles, including many definitions and rules for use as well as styles for capitalization, abbreviations, spelling and numbers.

The first publicly available edition was published in 1953 and renewed biennially for the next 20 years. Today AP Stylebook is updated annually (usually in June). In September 2009 Associated Press released the first mobile edition of Stylebook for iPhone - AP Stylebook app. In 2013, the Associated Press publishers celebrate the 60th anniversary of the book (edition numbers are no longer in use). The first Basic Book Edition was published in August 1977. The modern edition was released in several formats, including trade papers, flat-bound spiral-bound, online subscriptions, and iOS mobile apps.

Writers in broadcasting, magazine publishing, marketing departments, and public relations companies have traditionally adopted and implemented AP grammar and reading styles. Over the last 50 years, AP Stylebook has become a leading style for non-journalistic publishers such as corporate marketing and public relations departments. Simplified grammar, like dropping an Oxford comma and using numbers for all numbers above nine, saves rare prints and web space.

Organization

Stylebooks are organized into sections:

Business Guide

A reference section for journalists covering business and financial news including general knowledge of accounting, bankruptcy, mergers and international bureaus. For example, that includes an explanation of five different bankruptcy chapters.

Sports Guide and Style

Includes terminology, statistics, organizational rules, and guidelines commonly referenced by sports reporters. Example: The correct way to spell and use basketball terms for example, half court pass, goal and goaltending.

Guide for Punctuation

Specific guidelines on how to use punctuation in journalistic material, this section includes rules on dashes, commas, parentheses, and citations. Example: In series, use commas to separate items but no commas before connecting eg We buy eggs, milk and cheese at the store.

Direction on Media Law

An overview of legal issues and ethical expectations for those working in the journalism industry. Example: The difference between defamation and defamation. Defamation is pronounced; Defamation is written, to begin.

Photo Captions

Simple formula of what to include when writing an outline of a photo.

Editing Marks

Lock with an editing symbol to help journalists with proofreading process. Example: When a word is circled, it means the word should be abbreviated, or the abbreviation must not be minimized.

References

This provides a second reference material for information not included in the book. Example: Use Webster's New World Dictionary , Fourth Edition, Wiley, Hoboken, N.J. as the first reference after AP Stylebook for spelling, style, usage and foreign geographical name.

Title

Over the years, AP Stylebook is titled The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual . In 2000, this guide was named The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law . Some editions, like copies of 2004, use the shorter title The Associated Press Stylebook on the cover.

History

The Associated Press was first created in 1846. Throughout its history, the AP maintained a style book for member reporters. In the early 1950s the publication was formalized into the AP Stylebook and became the leading professional English grammar reference by most members and non-member news agencies around the world. Due to the increasing demand of journalists and non-member authors working in corporate communications facing the public, the AP published their style book for the general public in 1953. The first publication focuses on "where wires govern a particular style"; for nearly a quarter of a century, readers feel that they have "a solid foundation in good language and reference libraries" and thereby eliminate any guidance in these broader areas. In 1977, driven by AP Executive News Editor Louis Boccardi's request for "more reference works", organizations began to expand the book. The year's book was produced in conjunction with United Press International's competitors. In 1989, Norm Goldstein became editor of the AP Stylebook, a job he held until the 2007 edition. After publishing the latest edition under his editor, Goldstein commented on the future of the AP Stylebook < span> ' on the name reference:

I think the difference... now is that there is more information available on the Internet, and I'm not sure, and at least our executive editor is not sure how many reference books we should have anymore. I think some of our historical background material like in previous storms and earthquakes, the kind of encyclopedic material that is so easily available on the Internet today, might be trimmed.

Stylebook AP editor Paula Froke, Sally Jacobsen and David Minthorn are now leading Stylebook . In 2009 Stylebook was released as an iPhone app that includes regular updates and special features. The latest print edition is 2017 AP Stylebook , available spirals tied directly from the AP, and as the perfect pocket book sold by the Basic Book.

While nearly two million copies of the AP Stylebook have been distributed since 1977, today AP Stylebook is developing an online presence with profiles on social media platforms like Twitter (@APStylebook) and Facebook, and available through online subscription models and iOS mobile apps.

Revision process

The Stylebook is updated annually by Associated Press editors, usually in June, and at this time new edits and entries can be added. In 2008, 200 new entries were added, including words and phrases like "podcasts", "text messages", "social networking" and "high definition". The 2009 edition adds "Twitter" and "texting" entries. This is done to keep stylebook up to date with technological and cultural changes.
