History

The Time Magazine was created in 1923 by Briton Hadden and Henry Luce, making it the first weekly news magazine in the United States. The two had previously worked together as chairman and managing their respective editors from Yale Daily News. They first mentioned the proposed magazine Fact . They want to emphasize brevity, so that busy people can read it within an hour. They changed their name to Time and used the "Take Time-It's Brief" slogan. Hadden is considered cheerful and likes to tease Luce. He sees time as important but also fun, which contributes to the heavy coverage of celebrities (including politicians), the entertainment industry, and pop culture - criticized for being too light for serious news.

It's set to tell stories through people, and for decades the cover of the magazine depicts one person. Recently, Time has included the issue of "People of the Year" that are gaining popularity over the years. Their famous names are Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, etc. The first issue Time was published on March 3, 1923, featuring Joseph G. Cannon, Retired Retired House of Representatives, about the closing; a reprint of facsimile edition no. 1, including all articles and advertisements contained in the original, was included with a copy of the Feb. 28, 1938 issue to commemorate the magazine's fifteenth anniversary. The cover price is 15 Ã, Â ¢ (equivalent to $ 2.15 today). At Hadden's death in 1929, Luce became the dominant man on Time and the main character in the history of the media of the 20th century. According to Robert Elson, "Roy Edward Larsen [...] played the second role after Luce in Time Inc development." In his book, The March of Time, 1935-1951, Raymond Fielding also notes that Larsen is "the original circulation manager and then the general manager of Time , the next publisher of Life , for many years as president of Time Inc., and in the long history of corporations, the most influential and important figure after Luce. "

Around the time they collected $ 100,000 from wealthy Yale alumni like Henry P. Davison, J.P. Morgan & amp; Co., publicity man Martin Egan and J.P. Morgan & amp; Co bankers Dwight Morrow, Henry Luce, and Briton Hadden hired Larsen in 1922 - though Larsen was a graduate of Harvard and Luce and Hadden were Yale graduates. After Hadden died in 1929, Larsen bought 550 shares of Time Inc., using the money he earned from the sale of RKO shares he inherited from his father, who was the head of Benjamin Franklin Keith's theater network in New England. However, following the death of Briton Hadden, Time's largest shareholder was Henry Luce, who ruled an autocratic media conglomerate, "in his right hand is Larsen", the second largest shareholder of Time, according to Time Inc.: The Intimate History of Publishing Company 1923 -1941 . In 1929, Roy Larsen was also named as director and vice president of Time Inc. J. P. Morgan maintains certain controls through two directorates and shares, both above Time and Fortune . Other shareholders are Brown Brothers W. A. Harriman & amp; Co., and The New York Trust Company (Standard Oil).

Time Inc. Shares owned by Luce at the time of his death is worth about $ 109 million, and it has generated an annual dividend of more than $ 2.4 million, according to Curtis Prendergast The World of Time Inc. Intimate History of a Changing Enterprise 1957-1983 . The Larsen Family Time stock was worth about $ 80 million during the 1960s, and Roy Larsen was a Time Inc director. and chairman of his Executive Committee, who later served as vice chairman of the Board until mid-1979. According to the September 10, 1979 edition of The New York Times, Mr. Larsen was the only employee in the history of the company to be granted an exemption from mandatory retirement policy at age 65. "

After the magazine Time began publishing its weekly edition in March 1923, Roy Larsen was able to increase its circulation by utilizing US radios and theaters worldwide. Often promotes Time magazine and and US political and corporate interests. According to The March of Time , as early as 1924, Larsen brought Time into the baby radio business with a 15-minute quiz show titled Pop Question lasted until 1925. Then, in 1928, Larsen "conducted a weekly broadcast of a series of 10 minute short news briefings program, taken from the current edition of Time magazine which initially broadcasted more from 33 stations across the United States ".

Larsen was subsequently set for a 30-minute radio program, The March of Time, for broadcast on CBS, beginning on March 6, 1931. Each week, the program presents a dramatization of this week's news because of the listener, thus Time the magazine itself was brought "to the attention of millions of people who were previously unaware of its existence", according to Time Inc.: The Intimate History of a Publishing Enterprise 1923-1941 , which led to an increase in magazine circulation during the year 1930s. Between 1931 and 1937, the Larsen radio program The March of Time was broadcast on CBS radio and between 1937 and 1945 broadcast via NBC radio - except for the period 1939 to 1941 when it was not aired. People Magazine is based on The Time Page page.

In 1989, when Time, Inc. and Warner Communications joined, Time became a part of Time Warner, along with Warner Bros..

In 1988, Jason McManus replaced Henry Grunwald as Chief Editor and oversaw the transition before Norman Pearlstine succeeded him in 1995.

In 2007, Time moved from sending subscriptions/newspapers to Monday to the schedule where the magazine will be sold Friday, and delivered to customers on Saturday. The magazine actually started in 1923 with Friday's publication.

During early 2007, the first edition of the year was delayed for about a week due to "editorial changes", including a layoff of 49 employees.

In 2009, Time announced that they introduced a personalized print magazine, Mine , mixing content from various Time Warner publications based on reader preferences. This new magazine met with poor reception, with criticism that the focus is too broad to be completely private.

The magazine has an online archive with unformatted texts for each published article. The articles are indexed and modified from scanned images using optical character recognition technology. There is still a small error in the text that is the remainder of the conversion into digital format.

Time Inc. and Apple has reached an agreement whereby US customers to Time will be able to read the iPad version for free, at least until both companies complete a viable digital subscription model.

In January 2013, Time Inc. announced that it will cut nearly 500 jobs - about 6% of its 8,000 staff worldwide. Although Time magazine has maintained high sales, its ad pages have dropped significantly over time.

Also in January 2013, Time Inc. named Martha Nelson as the first female editor of the magazine's division. In September 2013, Nancy Gibbs was named first female editor of Time magazine.

In November 2017, Meredith Corporation announced the acquisition of the company. A few months later it was announced that Time was being sold.

Throughout history, Richard Nixon is the most enclosed male personality of all time, appearing within the red limits of a whopping 55 times, beginning with 25 August 1952, and ending with a May 2, 1994 issue. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton is the closest female personality, appearing on the cover 19 times, starting with the May 10, 1993 issue. The latest cover of Ms. Clinton is on September 18, 2017, featuring women who create landmarks in their respective fields.

Style

Time initially has a different writing style, using regular reverse sentences. It was parodied in 1936 by Wolcott Gibbs on The New Yorker : "Back off running sentences until the mind rolls [...] Where it will end, know God!"

Until the mid-1970s, Time had a weekly section called "List", which contained a capsule summary and/or a review of the most important current bestselling films, drama, musicals, television programs which is similar to The New Yorker ' s "Recent Events".

Time is also known as its red border signature, first introduced in 1927. The iconic red border was mocked or bullied by the Seattle newspaper The Stranger in 2010.

The border has changed only five times since 1927: Issues released shortly after the September 11 attacks in the United States featured a black border to symbolize mourning. However, this edition is a special "extra" special edition that is published quickly for the event's headlines; the next regularly scheduled issue contains a red border. In addition, the Earth Day edition of April 28, 2008, dedicated to environmental issues, contains a green border. The next border change is on the 19 September 2011 issue, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with metallic silver borders. Another silver border is used in the issue of December 31, 2012, and calls Barack Obama's selection as Person of the Year. The latest changes are November 28/December 5, 2016 edition, featuring a silver border covering Most Influential Images of All Time.

In 2007, Time engineered a magazine style overhaul. Among other changes, the magazine reduced the red cap limit to promote displayed stories, enlarged column headings, reduced number of stories displayed, increased white space around the article, and accompanied by opinion cuts with photographs of the authors. The changes have met both criticism and praise.

Special edition

Person of the Year

The Time ' most famous feature of its history has been the annual "Person of the Year" (where "Time of the Year"), where Time recognize individuals or groups of individuals who have the greatest impact on news headlines over the past 12 months. The difference should be to the person who, good or bad, most influences the course of the year; therefore not necessarily an honor or reward. In the past, figures like Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were the Man of the Year.

In 2006, Person of the Year was designated as "You", a move that was filled with separate reviews. Some think the concept is creative; others want real people this year. Editor Pepper and Timmer reflect on it, if it is a mistake, "we will only make it once".

In 2017, Time was named The Silence Breakers, women and men coming forward with personal stories of sexual harassment, as Person of the Year.

Time 100

In recent years, Time has compiled an annual list of the 100 most influential people of the year. Initially, they have made a list of 100 most influential people in the 20th century. These problems usually have front covers full of people's drawings from the list and devote large amounts of space in magazines to 100 articles about everyone on the list. There are, in some cases, more than 100 people, when two people have created a shared list, sharing one place.

The magazine also compiled a list of the "All-TIME 100 best novels" and "All- TIME 100 best films" in 2005, "100 Best All-Time TV Shows > TIME "in 2007, and" All- TIME 100 Fashion Icons "by 2012.

In February 2016, Time included English writer and man Evelyn Waugh on the "100 Most Read Female Writers in College Classes" list (he was ranked 97th in the list) which created a lot of media attention and concern about the level basic education among magazine staff. Time then issue a retraction. In a BBC interview with Justin Webb, Professor Valentine Cunningham of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, described the error as "a piece of deep ignorance in the Time magazine section.

Red X includes

During its history, for five consecutive times, Time has released a special edition with a cover showing X written on the face of a man or national symbol. The first Time magazine with red X cover was released on May 7, 1945, showing red X over the face of Adolf Hitler. The second X cover was released more than three months later on August 20, 1945, with the black X (to date, magazines using only black X) covering the Japanese flag, representing the recent Japanese surrender and which signaled the end of World War II.

Fifty-eight years later, on April 21, 2003, Time unleashed another issue with a red X over Saddam Hussein's face, two weeks after the invasion. On June 13, 2006, Time magazine printed a red X cover issue after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death in a US air strike in Iraq. The latest X cover issue of Time was published on May 2, 2011, following the death of Osama bin Laden.
