broken fence or log fencing (also known as the zigzag , fencing worm or the historical snake fence because of its winding layout) is a type of fence built in the United States and Canada, and made of logs, usually split into rough and usually used for agricultural fences or decorations. Such a fence needs more wood than any other type of fence, and is generally only common in areas where wood is plentiful. However, they are very simple in their construction, and can be assembled with some tools even in hard or rocky soil. They can also be built without the use of nails or other hardware; Such hardware is often rare in border areas. They are very popular in very rocky areas where excavation of posthole is almost impossible. They can even be partially or completely dismantled if the fence needs to be moved or wood becomes more useful for other purposes. During the American Civil War, these fences were the main source of firewood for the forces of Unity and Confederation.

Double rail fence made of wood that is easy to split, resist rotten. Traditionally American chestnut is the wood of choice until the chestnut blight is removed this tree. Currently, most of the separate rails are made of cedar. Whether from chestnut or cedar, the log is cut to 10 to 12 feet (3.0 to 3.7 m) long and divided by the length of the log. Each half is then divided into four, one-eighth and so on until the rails have a usable size. Logs can produce from four rails from 8 inches (20 cm) log to over a dozen of larger logs. The rails are stacked on top of each other. Most railway fences have rails stacked in a self-locking, self-contained zig-zag mode, easy to make, easy to repair, and easy to disassemble.

Some wooden fences have rails stacked directly on top of each other and secured with double fence posts (one on either side of the rail). This makes the fence more permanent and compact but still easy to repair.

The distance between zig or zag is generally 16.5 feet (5 m) or one bar. Therefore, field plots can be calculated by counting zigs or zag along the sides and ends of the field: one hundred sixty square rods are 1-acre (0.40 ha).

Pagar cedar paten

In Canada efforts were made to patent some cedar fence designs. These styles are known as Patent Cedar Fences. The use of two rails to form a cross, has a top rail, bench rail and lighter rails, allow it to stand freely, withstand strong winds and take a lower fence than a zig-zag or snake fence.

In England (and increasingly in the American suburbs) different styles of fencing are used. It is not free standing but consists of vertical posts placed on the ground, having holes (mortises) on each side where the roughly pointed ends of the split rail (usually sweet chestnut) are placed. No need to zig-zagging. This style is usually used as a decorative fence, or for horse maintenance.
