For men in Europe or Europe-settled areas, having short hair is now generally the norm, although long hair or wigs have been fashionable at various times in the past (including ancient Sparta, 18th century, and 1970s).
In East Asia, style is in the development of relativity recently. Cultures in the Sinosphere generally maintain the tradition of growing a person's long hair without pruning, although it is usually worn. The Qing Dynasty required this to be cut into queue, but not until the rise of the colonial empires of Europe and the Republic of China that what is usually regarded as short hair became popular for men.

Short hair for women became fashionable in the 1920s. Short hair is quite popular throughout the 60s, but the 70s and 80s preferred a different hairstyle. It became popular in the 1990s and remains so to this day.
