In live entertainment, there are several possible schemes for seating assignments of the audience. There are some of the most commonly used schemes, although there are no hard and fast rules and alternative schemes or modifications are sometimes used according to the event.

Reserved seating

In the pure reserved seats (also known as the seat allocation or seated seating ), each ticket is given a special place at the venue time of purchase. Chairs are usually identified by line/letter number, seat number, and sometimes part by part.

Protected seating is the most commonly used scheme for large indoor spaces such as larger stadiums, arenas, and theaters. It is also common elsewhere, like other seating schemes, such as outdoor amphitheatres.

General revenue

In general acceptance (also known as the open seating or free seating scheme), each viewer has a ticket. However, the location from which they will watch the event is determined upon arrival at the venue. Public acceptance is most often used in places that do not have seats, such as outdoor festival shows and smaller club performances. It is also sometimes used in seating parts that do not have seats that should have reserved seats (only stand-alone parts, including floor parts at some concerts). In some public reception events, tickets may still assign the holder to a particular part of the venue (eg, balcony or floor), with a choice of seats in the section.

Public acceptance may also refer to the scheme in which seating is available; However, it is not pre-assigned. Usually in this scheme, seat selection is based on who first came, first served. A common example of this scheme is most cinemas in the United States.

Public admissions can be counted without a specified seat number, or may be pristine, first served, where a certain number of first persons are admitted is recognized (either as a free event, or paying at the gate). Due to the nature of the first arrival, first-served from the seating selection, the line-up may still be formed for pre-ticket events.

Festival Seating

Festival seats usually refer to the form of public (first-come, first-served) reception where there is a large open area (generally outdoors) and all spectators must stand (unless they are allowed to carry portable seating themselves). Many musical acts use the festival seating as it allows the most enthusiastic fans to approach the stage and generate excitement for the crowd. Several players and bands insisted on the festival seating area near the stage.

On December 3, 1979, the Coliseum Riverfront in Cincinnati, Ohio, was one of the worst rock concert tragedies in US history. Eleven fans were killed and several dozen others were injured in a hurry to sit at the opening of the sold-out concert by The Who. The concert uses a festival seat. When the crowds waiting outside hear the band do the soundcheck, they think the concert starts and crash into the still-closed door, stomping them in front of the crowd.

The tragedy was blamed on poor mass control, especially the failure of the arena management to open the door enough to face the crowd outside. As a result, concert venues in North America switched to specified seats or changed their rules about festival seats. Cincinnati immediately banned the festival's seats at the concert, despite canceling a ban on August 4, 2004, because the ban made it difficult for Cincinnati to book a concert. (In 2002, the city had made a one-time exemption for the ban, allowing the festival venue for the Bruce Springsteen concert, no problem experienced.) Cincinnati is the only US city to ban festival seats altogether.

Lawn Seating

"Lawn seating" refers to a seating method in which concert audiences sit on the grass behind the venue. Participants can sometimes bring their own seats, or rent them from vendors at concerts.
