This style is achieved by dividing the hair into several parts, twisting the hair, then twisting two strands of hair that are wrapped around each other. They can also be made with one hair at a time, with a comb. They should not be confused with bigger, longer, (or "locs") dreadlocks.

Both hairstyles like Senegal can last from one to three months, but should not be stored for longer periods of time. Because of this hairstyle technique, a person's natural hair can begin to tangle or form dreadlocks.
