Fairlane Town Center is a super-regional shopping mall on the outskirts of Detroit Dearborn, Michigan. The anchor shop is Macy's, JCPenney, and Sears. This mall includes an AMC cinema, also H & amp; M, and LA Fitness amongst other major stores. The mall is adjacent to the former Hyatt Regency Dearborn and former Ritz Carlton hotel. University of Michigan-Dearborn, Henry Ford Community College, Henry Ford, and Ford Motor Company headquarters are also nearby. Ford plans to move several offices to the mall itself.

After a massive renovation in 2007, the mall has a large food court, full-service restaurant, several restaurants and merchandises for the urban market. The mall is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Detroit, Wayne State University, or Metro Airport.

History

Developed by A. Alfred Taubman, Fairlane Town Center opened on 1 March 1976. This mall is one of four super-regional Taubman malls built in Detroit metro area in the 1970s, the other three are Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor ( 1973), Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights (1976) and Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi (1977).

In 1976, the mall opened with JCPenney as the northern anchor and Sears as the southern anchor; Hudson opened in July next. Additional features include an ice skating rink (on the ground floor), a 5 screen cinema (on the second floor above the ice skating rink), as well as a unique elevated Ford ACT monorail car transporting buyers between the mall and nearby Hyatt Regency Hotel. The monorail system ceased in 1987, and the rail was destroyed in 1990. God & amp; Taylor was added in 1978, along with shops in Twelve Oaks and the Lakeside mall, and Saks Fifth Avenue opened in 1980.

The first Coffee Beanery opened at the mall in 1978.

In the early 1980s, ice skating rinks were removed and the space was transformed into a 5 screen cinema, operated by United Artists. (5 screens are on the ground floor, and 5 extra screens are on the second floor.) It was closed in the late 1990s. The room was demolished to pave the way for 20 Star Theater multiplex screens that were added in 1999. Also in 1999, a Food court was added. In 2006 AMC joined the Star and became AMC Star. Saks Fifth Avenue changed its store to Off 5 Outlet format in January 2002, operating only on the first floor.

Hudson adopted the name Marshall Field in 2001 shortly before the chain was acquired by the May Company and again in 2005 by the Department Store Federation; in 2006, the store was converted into Macy's along with all other Marshall Field stores in Michigan. In 2004, Fairlane adopted an adult supervision policy to prevent under-age loosening. & Amp; Taylor closed in 2006 when Macy sold the brand to high end Saks Fifth Avenue.

In 2007, the mall completed a major three-year renovation project. This mall secures H & amp; M as a major tenant in 2007. The same year, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th closed outlet stores in malls and demolished in 2008 for new wings featuring restaurants such as BRAVO !, Cucina Italiana, and P.F. Chang's China Bistro.

In 2014, the Taubman Center announced that Fairlane and six other malls (including The Mall at Partridge Creek) will be sold to Starwood Capital Group LLC for $ 1.4 billion. By 2015, DSW on the former wing of Lord and Taylor moved to the nearest shopping center. Two years later, Ford Motor Company added a new office in the former Lord & amp; Taylor and the wing section, accommodating over 200,000 square feet of space. The wing was blocked in early April 2016. Then in 2017, Backstage Macy - an off-price variant of its namesake - opened its first location in Michigan, occupying the majority of the third floor.

On May 31, 2018, Sears announced that there is a shop here to be closed as part of a plan to close 72 national stores. The store will close in September 2018.

Architecture

The unique and innovative Fairlane Town Center interior follows the theme of other Taubman shopping centers.

The internal pedestrian network consists of two floors through most malls, and the third level is designed into the center of the central court. The mid-level design is probably one of the most unusual mall designs, sharing the concept with Schaumburg, Illinois' Woodfield Mall and the original Eastridge Center, in San Jose, California. One side of the central mall is lower, and the intermediate level is formed between the upper and lower levels, thus creating a three-tier design in the center of the court while maintaining a two-level design across the mall.

Because of the original monorail system, there is a double interior court rather than a single large court. The south central court was originally designed as a center of activity, with a stage and seating, and the northern central court was designed as the location of a large-scale fountain.

Each court anchor has a large statue and seating area. The interior has terrazzo-tiled floors, a wood-trimmed glass fence, and white-and-articulated walls with geometric, triangular-shaped skylights featuring three halogen lamps mounted on top of each dome. Access between the three retail levels is provided by a complex, gentle, escalator and two "octave-lift" elevators located in the center of the mall respectively.
