Real Escape Game (REG) in Japan was developed by Takao Kato, 35, from the Kyoto publishing company SCRAP Co. in 2007. It is based in Kyoto, Japan and produces free magazines of the same name. Outside of Japan, the escape game appeared in Singapore from 2011, progressing to over 50 games in 2015. Kazuya Iwata, a friend of Kato, brought Real Escape Game to San Francisco in 2012. The following year, Seattle's Puzzle Break was founded by Nate Martin became the first American based space escape company. The Japanese game consists mainly of logical puzzles, such as mathematical sequences or color codes, such as video games that inspire them.

Parapark, the Hungarian franchise which is then operated in 20 locations in Europe and Australia, was established in 2011 in Budapest. The founder, Attila Gyurkovics, claims that he has no information about the game of escaping Japan and is based on the game on MihÃÆ'¡ly flow theory CsÃÆ'kszentmihÃÆ'¡lyi and his work experience as a personality trainer. Unlike the Japanese precursors, in the game Parapark players must especially find a hidden key or reach that seems impossible to advance.

In 2012 a Swiss physics professor made a scientific escape game for his students. This can be very beneficial for operators, as upfront investment is as low as US $ 7,000, while a party of 4-8 customers pay around US $ 25-30 per person for an hour to play, potentially generating upward annual income of a few hundred thousand dollars.

The room or area format containing puzzles or challenges has been featured on several TV game shows over the years, including Now Out of It, Adventure Games, Crystal Labyrinths and Fort Boyard. Similar experiences can be found in interactive fiction software, and Escape the room video games.
