Careers of government
In December 1964, a typhoon swept part of the Pamban Bridge connecting Rameswaram to the mainland of Tamil Nadu. The train set a six-month target for the bridge to be repaired while the Sreedharan boss, under the jurisdiction of the bridge, reduced it to three months. Sreedharan was commissioned on execution and he returned the bridge in only 46 days. Appreciation of the Minister of Railways was given to him in recognition of this achievement.
Metro Kolkata âââ ⬠<â â¬
In 1970, as deputy chief engineer, he was assigned to carry out, plan and design the Calcutta metro, the first metro in India. Sreedharan not only completed this much-vaunted project but also laid the foundation for modern infrastructure engineering in India. He was expelled from this post in 1975.
Cochin Shipyard Limited
When Sreedharan joined the Cochin Shipyard in October 1979, it was experiencing an unproductive phase. The production of its first vessel MV Rani Padmini has been delayed for a long time. When Sreedharan took over, he changed the fate of the shipyard around and made sure his first ship was built when he was chairman and executive director (CMD). In 1981, under the leadership of Sreedharan, the shipyard launched its first ship, MV Rani Padmini.
On Contract
Konkan Railway
He was promoted as general manager, Western Railway in July 1987, and in July 1989 was appointed to the Member Engineering post, Railway Council and ex-officio Secretary to the Government of India. In his retirement in June 1990, the Government insisted that he still needed his services and he was appointed CMD Konkan Railway on a contract in 1990 by then railway minister, George Fernandes. Under his supervision, the company carries out its mandate within seven years. The project is unique in many ways. This is India's first major project undertaken on a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) basis; its organizational structure is different from that of the Indian Railway; the project has 93 tunnels along 82 km and involves tunnels through soft soil. The total project covers 760 km and has more than 150 bridges. That public sector project can be completed without significant cost and excessive time is considered as achievement by many people. Konkan Railway has been covered in the Extreme Railways program by Chris Tarrant as one of the most difficult railroad projects that have been built in the world.
Delhi Metro
He was appointed executive director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation at the time by Delhi's Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma and in mid-1997 all parts scheduled for completion on the target date or earlier, and within their budgets. Sreedharan was nicknamed Metro Man by the media for a great success in executing the completion of Metro Delhi. His job at Delhi Metro has been deemed to be very successful and important for India which in 2005, he was awarded the Chevalier de la LÃÆ' à © gion d'honneur (Honorary Legion Knight) by the French government, and Padma Vibhushan by the Indian government in 2008. There is also demands by prominent political figures that Sreedharan was awarded Bharat Ratna, India's most prestigious civilian award. He is primarily known for isolating his projects from political pressure and influence and winning political commitment to project execution quickly. She has announced that she will retire at the end of 2005, but her term is extended to oversee the completion of Delhi Metro's second phase. After 16 years working at Delhi Metro, Sreedharan retired from service on December 31, 2011.
Kochi Metro
After retiring from DMRC, Sreedharan has been appointed as the Main Advisor of Metro Railway Project in Kochi. Initially, the project faced an obstacle when a controversy broke out with the government announcing a global tender process for Kochi Metro, rather than allowing DMRC to handle project consultation and implementation as requested by Sreedharan and DMRC. Personal interests in government have been alleged in this decision. However, several political parties emerged against the move, and supported Sreedharan's decision to enforce the DMRC role on the Kochi Metro, after which the government reversed its stance. The Kochi metro was finally inaugurated on June 17, 2017 amid many celebrations. The disclosure of the metro is considered an important event in India in terms of completion time, the control system used and initiatives such as employing transgender people, vertical gardening, respect for migrant workers, and use of solar power.
Lucknow Metro
Sreedharan has also been appointed Chief Advisor to Metro Lucknow. As per Sreedharan, Kochi metro is built in four years while Lucknow Metro will be completed within two years and nine months, and it will be the fastest in India and the world until now.
